Former WBA and IBF light welterweight titlist Amir Khan believes he has too big of a heart, which makes him prone to knockout losses. In a recent interview, Khan spoke of the numerous issues he has been facing recently, including his last knockout loss against American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia. According to Khan, when he is hit, he moves in the circle to hit his opponent back, which is the main reason why he faces knockout losses.
?I think I have too big of a heart. I?m an exciting fighter, and when I get hurt I think I get into fight mode with my opponent,? said Khan in an interview with Dog House Boxing. ?My style is ?hit and move? and if I am hurt, I need to think about that, and get back to basics instead of rushing in there and trying to knock my opponent out.?
Khan also spoke of the recent change he made, switching from Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach to American trainer of the year for 2011 Virgil Hunter. When asked if the choice was a difficult one to make, Khan denied, saying everything was under control and it was a decision he had to take.
?It wasn?t too hard really, I need someone who is going to be with me 100%, people can say that because he has Andre Ward he?s not going to spend much time with me, but it?s not the case, Virgil has been spending day in and day out with me, telling me what to do right, and making me improve my mistakes,? he added.
Khan fired Roach last month and switched to Hunter, believing that the owner of Wild Card Gym was unable to train him to the next level.
According to Khan, he has learned all what Roach had to offer and now it is time for him to go further in his training. Khan also iterated that he is changing his style and working on his defence for his fight against Carlos Molina in December.
Khan faces unbeaten American fighter Molina on December 15 in Los Angeles.
