Land of the Dead (2005): Kaufman's Promises

The clip Kaufman's Promises from Land of the Dead (2005) Alternative sites have been chosen for us and our families... as well as necessary support personnel. What about all the others? All the others can be replaced by others. Boss. You're interrupting me, Bill. It's bad timing. Just when I was talking about how people can be replaced. A day may come when you earn yourself some responsibilities. But right now the responsibilities are mine. They're all mine. It was my ingenuity that took an old world... and made it into something new. I put up the fences to make it safe. I hired the soldiers and paid for their training. I kept the people off the streets by giving them games and vices... which cost me money. But I spend it because the responsibility is mine. Now, do you understand the meaning of the word responsibility? We have to do what we have to do. Foxy, I know I'm never gonna be great. I'm never gonna be on the list of names of people... who done great things because I don't do anything. Not one thing. If it wasn't for this truck, I wouldn't be any different... than that poor Mexican bastard out there. Cholo, look, Kaufman might not pay. Kaufman's gonna pay, man. But if he doesn't, he knows I'm gonna do a jihad on his ass. When you hit Route 6, take a right. How do you know which way to go? Homing device. Cool.

Wall Street flat in choppy trade; ECB in focus

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were flat in volatile trade on Wednesday as investors awaited clarity on media reports that the European Central Bank would, with broad support from its council members, unveil an unlimited, sterilized program of bond purchases.

Bloomberg reported that Draghi's plan would involve unlimited buying of government bonds. The ECB has been expected to be cautious about disclosing the size of its bond-buying, given opposition from Germany's central bank.

The report comes ahead of an ECB meeting on Thursday and the Federal Open Market Committee's own policy meeting next week on Sept 12-13.

"I think there's a very significant risk that there's going to be a sell-the-news reaction. Even if the ECB comes with some kind of bond-buying program and the Fed announces some form of additional stimulus, I think there's a pretty good chance that the market will sell that news," said James Dailey, portfolio manger at TEAM Asset Strategy fund in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

FedEx Corp, the world's No. 2 package delivery company, cut its profit outlook for the current quarter, saying weakness in the global economy was hurting demand for overnight international shipments more than anticipated. The announcement was made after the closing bell on Tuesday.

Nokia and Microsoft Corp will take the wraps off the struggling European company's most powerful smartphone on Wednesday, in what may be their last major shot at winning back a market dominated by Apple , Samsung and Google .

Facebook Inc promised not to sell stock to cover a nearly $2 billion tax bill and said it will allow employees to cash in their stock weeks ahead of schedule, moving to soothe nervous investors and its own staff as its share price spirals downward from its $38 IPO price.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 15.14 points, or 0.12 percent, at 13,051.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.47 points, or 0.03 percent, at 1,404.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 4.40 points, or 0.14 percent, at 3,070.66.

An Inside Look at Bangkok's World Gourmet Festival | Travel + ...

By Diana Hubbell

Though Bangkok is justifiably proud of its own culinary heritage, this increasingly cosmopolitan city also has a fierce appreciation for international fine dining. At no time is this more readily apparent than during the annual World Gourmet Festival at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok. The event gives chefs from all over the world a chance to flaunt their skills and swap ideas, all for a good cause (a portion of the proceeds go to charity).

WGF2012_1

This year, a couple of us from Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia went behind the scenes to get a closer look at all the hard work that goes into bringing so many culinary superstars to one place. We took a sneak peek at the kitchens where the chefs chatted casually in a hodgepodge of languages while deftly chopping, stirring and frying some of the hundreds of dishes. Though we heard snippets of Thai, Italian, Spanish and English, no one seemed to have any difficulty communicating. After all, they all spoke at least one common language: food.

Back in the dining room, we had the chance to witness two live cooking demonstrations. Here?s our take on two very different dishes by two very different chefs.

WGF2012_2

Victor Quintill? Imbern?n Lluerna, Barcelona, Spain

The dish: Hailing from Barcelona, the undisputed capital of molecular gastronomy, and with experience working under Ferran Adri? at the famed elBulli, it was no surprise that Chef Imbern?n chose to prepare a somewhat unconventional dish. His deceptively simple-sounded zucchini curry turned out to be a clever East-meets-West creation.

The technique: The curry started, as many good things do, with copious amounts of butter and olive oil. Chef Imbern?n gently saut?ed diced onion, zucchini and spices until fragrant, then simmered everything with milk until the mixture reduced and was soft enough to force through an immersion blender.

Everything about the recipe seemed straightforward enough until this point. The fun began when Chef Imbern?n topped the puree with sperified globs of coconut cream and yellow curry paste. These texturally curious orbs?each with a liquid interior held together by a thin exterior film?are made possible thanks to a seaweed-derived compound called sodium alginate, an oft-used ingredient in molecular gastronomy. The chef then garnished the final dish with peanuts, julienned apple, cilantro, olive oil and edible flowers.

WGF2012_3

The verdict: The curry was a lovely display of Chef Imbern?n?s respect for Thai traditions, though with mostly European ingredients and techniques. The sperified coconut orbs added more than just an element of drama; they punctuated the otherwise mild puree with bursts of richness and flavor.

Igor Macchia La Credenza, Piedmont, Italy

The dish: While Barcelona may be known as one of the world?s most experimental food cities, Piedmont, the home of Chef Macchia?s Michelin-starred restaurant La Credenza, celebrates traditional cooking. Best known as the birthplace of the global Slow Food movement, this northern Italian region honors age-old techniques and high quality ingredients. Chef Macchia chose to showcase a northern Italian classic, risotto, with a contemporary presentation.

The technique: Risotto is a dish requiring patience and, in this case, the help of a couple of volunteers. Pichayanee, our Digital Media Manager stepped up to help the chef stir Arborio rice with stock. When the proper consistency had been achieved, Chef Macchia added roasted red pepper puree and generous handfuls of Parmigiano-Reggiano. He then plated the risotto and topped it with a vivid green spiral of parsley-emulsion and a dollop of anchovy-cream.

WGF2012_4

The verdict: The final dish was gorgeously presented and the pungent anchovy added a welcome contrast to the creamy risotto.

The 13th World Gourmet Festival will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok from September 3 through 9, 2012. For tickets and event information, go to worldgourmetfestivalbangkok.com.

Xtandi Approved for Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer ...

Medivation and?Astellas announced that the FDA has approved Xtandi (enzalutamide) capsules for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who have previously received docetaxel (Taxotere; Sanofi Aventis).

The efficacy and safety of Xtandi were assessed in a randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter Phase 3 clinical trial. A total of 1,199 patients with mCRPC who had previously received docetaxel were randomized 2:1 to receive either Xtandi orally at a dose of 160mg once daily (N=800) or placebo (N=399). The primary endpoint of the trial was overall survival. Xtandi-treated patients had a statistically-significant improvement in median overall survival compared to the placebo group: 18.4 months in the Xtandi group vs. 13.6 months in the placebo group (P<0.0001). Xtandi provided a 37% reduction in risk of death compared to placebo (hazard ratio=0.631).

Enzalutamide is an androgen receptor inhibitor that acts on different steps in the androgen receptor signaling pathway. Medivation and Astellas expect to make Xtandi available in mid-September 2012.

Weakness In Chinese Employment And Domestic Demand Suggests Policy Easing Might Be Back On The Table

China's official manufacturing PMI contracted to 49.2 in August, below economist's expectations of a decline to 50. This puts China's manufacturing at a nine-month low.

But a look at the sub-indices shows some truly worrisome signs for China. New orders fell to 48.7 in August, from 49.0 in July, while new export orders held steady at 46.6. This shows that there has been a decline in domestic demand.

Moreover the employment sub-index fell to 49.1 in August, from 49.5 the previous month.

We have previously argued that China won't unleash a massive stimulus, because as part of China's rebalancing, policymakers are comfortable with a slower pace of growth. Although premiere Wen Jiabao and president Hu Jintao have recently emphasized growth, they haven't unleashed anything close to the 4 trillion yuan stimulus of 2008.

Instead policymakers are more concerned with employment growth. In recent weeks Chinese stocks were hit by reports that Beijing wouldn't easy policy much further, but the weakness in employment shown in this manufacturing report suggests some action from policymakers might be in the pipeline, though another massive stimulus is still unlikely. Bank of America's Ting Lu writes:

?Employment? dropped further to 49.1 in Aug from 49.7 in June. The further deterioration of labor market condition could push Beijing to step up policy easing/stimulus in supporting growth. In this year of leadership transition, employment and social stability should be of top concern to politicians. Note that ?Employment? started dropping to below 50.0 in October 2011, which might help trigger a change in policy stance at that time."

Lu expects a second round of policy easing including reserve requirement ratio cuts in September and October. But he warns that "the scale of easing/stimulus won?t be very big, and we should avoid taking local goverments' long-term planning as short-term stimulus".

A's smash Red Sox 20-2, win 7th straight

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:26 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - At one point late in Friday night's game, Josh Reddick hustled up to the clubhouse for a quick protein bar when he saw that Coco Crisp was hitting again. Reddick ran back down to the field before his turn came up again.

The Oakland Athletics experienced one of those rare offensive nights when nearly everything that could go right did. For everybody, too.

Brandon Moss had career highs of four hits, four RBIs and four runs, Reddick hit his first career grand slam, and the surging, surprising A's routed the Boston Red Sox 20-2 to match their best winning streak of the season at seven.

"It's fun, everybody's running to the bat rack ready to bat," Reddick said. "You can't wait to get in the batter's box."

What a way to head into the season's final month. And what a thump for Boston the week it unloaded its roster.

Josh Donaldson homered for the third straight game with a two-run shot and Moss also had a two-run drive to go with two RBI doubles to help back Brandon McCarthy (8-5) with a season high in runs.

Reddick connected for his 28th homer in the seventh off Mark Melancon as the A's scored their most runs since a 23-2 win over Texas on Sept. 30, 2000. They handed the Red Sox their most lopsided loss since a 22-1 defeat to the Yankees on June 19, 2000.

The A's had a season-best 19 hits and scored 20 runs for the fourth time in Oakland history, while Boston allowed 20 for the first time since Aug. 21, 2009, against the Yankees. Oakland has won six straight over Boston - the Red Sox's longest skid in the series since also dropping six straight in 1969.

"It wasn't any fun for anyone, that's for sure, except for the guys on the other side," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said.

George Kottaras had his first career two-homer game with a two-run drive and a solo shot on the way to a career-best five RBIs for Oakland (74-57), which matched its win total from 2011 and wrapped up an 18-10 August. The A's hit a season-high five home runs a day after getting four at Cleveland.

Oakland's nine-run seventh inning was the club's biggest since a nine-run frame last July 27 against Tampa Bay.

Jonny Gomes drove in two runs on a night he helped honor the Little League World Series players from his hometown of Petaluma in Northern California's wine country.

"I don't know that I can ask for much more than 20 runs," A's manager Bob Melvin said.

Donaldson added his third RBI on an error in the seventh, but was lifted for pinch-runner Adam Rosales at third after feeling some tightness in his right hip flexor. He hoped to play Saturday.

McCarthy won consecutive starts for the first time since June, and it was good timing with the A's leading Baltimore by a game in the AL wild-card race heading into the final month. The right-hander missed all of July while on the disabled list for a second time this year nursing a strained throwing shoulder.

Donaldson connected for his fifth home run of the year in Oakland's four-run second against Aaron Cook (3-8), who also surrendered an RBI double to Moss and a run-scoring single by Gomes during the inning.

Cook went just 2 2-3 innings to match his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander was tagged for six runs and seven hits and fell to 0-3 over his last four starts.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-out solo homer in the fourth for Boston, which lost its fourth straight game after being swept by the Angels in Los Angeles.

"Nothing to talk about. The score was 20-2!" second baseman Dustin Pedroia said.

Oakland returned from a 6-1 road trip to notch another impressive win on a night when the Petaluma Little Leaguers, third in the Little League World Series, played catch with the A's on the field before the game and were honored in a pregame ceremony.

While Oakland is expected to activate third Brandon Inge from the disabled list when rosters expand Saturday, Melvin will have a tough time taking Donaldson's hot bat out of the lineup - as long as he is still healthy. Inge has been on the DL since Aug. 12 with a sprained right shoulder.

Second baseman Cliff Pennington made a great catch on a shallow fly ball by Jacoby Ellsbury to end the third, sprinting backward to complete the play, then hit an RBI double in the seventh. Stephen Drew also got into the seventh-inning fun with an RBI single. Everybody on the Oakland roster scored.

Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a first-inning single for the new-look Red Sox, who last week sent a handful of former stars to Southern California to join the Los Angeles Dodgers as they try to make a push in the NL West against the first-place San Francisco Giants.

Notes: Red Sox DH David Ortiz could rejoin the club at Seattle early next week or once the team gets back home after he received an injection in his strained right Achilles that landed him on the DL this past Monday. ... A.J. Griffin (3-0) will be recalled by Oakland to start Saturday as LHP Brett Anderson gets an extra day of rest before pitching Sunday. ... Oakland leads the season series 6-1 and has won more than five games in a single year against the Red Sox for the first time since going 7-3 in 2006, the A's last year in the playoffs. ... Oakland recalled RHP Pedro Figueroa from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned RHP Jim Miller to Class-A Stockton. With Sacramento in the playoffs and Stockton's season about to end, Miller is eligible to rejoin the A's Tuesday and that's the plan. ... The 18 runs allowed by Boston matched its most of 2012, April 17 against Texas. The Red Sox gave up nine runs in an inning for the first time since Sept. 27, 2006, against the Rays.

Clinton says US can work with China in Pacific

Jim Watson / AP

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during an event on peace and security in the Pacific, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, on Friday.

By NBC News wire services

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands -- The United States will buttress security partnerships across the Pacific as it strengthens ties with island nations, but also hopes to work more closely with China as Beijing expands its own influence in the region, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on Friday.

Clinton arrived in the tiny Pacific outpost of the Cook Islands for this year's Pacific Islands Forum, part of Washington's effort to woo nations across the Asia-Pacific which are increasingly coming under China's shadow.

Clinton told the gathering, which represents 16 independent and self-governing states ranging from Australia and New Zealand to smaller islands such as Tuvalu and Nauru, that the United States was in the region for the long haul.

But she also played down growing perceptions of a U.S.-China rivalry in the region, declaring "the Pacific is big enough for all of us" and dismissing the notion that expanded U.S. activity was "a hedge against particular countries."

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

"We think it is important for the Pacific Island nations to have good relationships with as many partners as possible, and that includes China as well as the United States," Clinton told a news conference with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

"We want to see more international development projects that include the participation of China," Clinton said, citing disaster relief, maritime security and preserving bio-diversity.

"We think that there's a great opportunity to work with China and we're going to be looking for more ways to do that," she said.

For more coverage on China, visit NBC's Behind The Wall

China's Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai is also attending the Pacific forum and told reporters Beijing's presence in the Pacific was not about geo-political influence.

"We are here in this region not to seek any particular influence, still less dominance," Cui told a news conference before Clinton made her remarks.

The wife of a disgraced Chinese politician has been given a suspended death sentence for her role in the death of British businessman, Neil Heywood. ITV's Angus Walker reports.

"We are here to work with island countries to achieve sustainable development, because both China and the Pacific island countries belong to the rank of developing countries.

"Although we are far away geographically, although we have different national conditions....we are faced with very similar tasks of achieving sustainable development, of improving the lives of our peoples."

$32 million in new aid
Despite her softer tone on China -- which comes just four days before she pays a visit to Beijing next week -- Clinton also sought to underscore the benefits of the "American model of partnership" in a region where China has in recent years dramatically stepped up its diplomacy and foreign assistance.

She announced more than $32 million in new U.S. programs on issues ranging from sustainable development, climate change and marine protection.

Ex-US consulate guard admits trying to sell secrets to China

But Clinton also stressed that the United States plays a crucial security role in the region, noting that the U.S. Coast Guard already has formal partnerships with nine Pacific Island nations and was working to build more as part of a broader "pivot" to the Asia-Pacific.

"All of us have an interest in maintaining peace and security in the Pacific," Clinton said, adding the United States was committed to helping fight illegal and unregulated shipping, patrol fishing grounds, and combat other human trafficking.

In a signal of Washington's security emphasis on the region, U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) chief Admiral Samuel Locklear also traveled to Rarotonga to hail joint maritime exercises and cooperation on issues such as cleaning up unexploded ordinance left over from the Second World War.

"U.S. PACOM is committed to supporting our Pacific Island partners," Locklear said.

Rivalry with China
Clinton's trip to the South Pacific has spurred some criticism in China, where some commentators accused the United States of seeking to stir up trouble as Beijing's economic and political influence expands.

In recent trips to other regions of the world, most notably Africa, Clinton has sought to contrast the U.S. approach to cooperative economic development with other models such as China's, which focus more on condition-free loans and extractive industries such as mining and timber.

Beijing is financing projects across the region including constructing parliament buildings, airports, roads and hospitals and giving out grants for Chinese language instruction.

Clinton depicted these efforts, which some local analysts say appear aimed at building Beijing's influence in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, as not necessarily at odds with U.S. interests -- although she pointedly noted that sometimes China's methods were open to criticism.

As Clinton preps for Asia-Pacific tour, is North Korea capable of reform?

"Here in the Pacific we want to see China act in a fair and transparent way," Clinton said.

The three-day visit by Clinton and the 60-odd person U.S. delegation to the Cook Islands - which is in free association with New Zealand - was a major event for the nation's main island of Rarotonga, which has only about 11,000 people.

"We are encouraged by you and your government's commitment to strengthen the United States government's engagement in our region," Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna said in his welcoming remarks.

Clinton's trip will continue to Indonesia and China next week, where her new conciliatory tone will be put the test in talks expected to focus on rising tensions in the South China Sea where Beijing is at odds with several of its southern neighbors over territorial claims.

A summit of regional leaders in July failed to reach consensus on how to handle the disputes. Clinton will press them to find common ground and hash out a framework for negotiating with China, U.S. officials said.

One senior official told reporters that it was "absolutely manifest" that ASEAN nations find a way to deal with China. "It's not a matter of geo-strategy, it's a matter of geography," the official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly preview the discussions, said Clinton would be stressing the U.S. view "that it is absolutely essential that cooler heads prevail in every capital and that great care be taken on these issues."

The U.S. takes no position on the sovereignty of the disputed territories, though some are claimed by allies such as South Korea, Japan and the Philippines as well as China, but "insists that they are dealt with diplomatically, without coercion (and) without the threat of the use of force."?

Should Ford to buy Hawker Beechcraft? Publication makes that case

Ford Motor Co. is actually no stranger to aviation manufacturer.

A lot of companies have been mentioned as possible suitors for Hawker Beechcraft Corp.

Cessna Aircraft Co. and Brazil-based Embraer have come up.

Even Mahindra, the Indian vehicle manufacturer, has been rumored as having an interest in Hawker.

Hawker, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, is in exclusive negotiations with Superior Aviation Beijing Co. Ltd. on a potential $1.79 billion sale of its civil aviation business. But even a deal is reached, other companies would have an opportunity to outbid Superior at the end of the process.

But Aviation International News lays out a surprising case for a company that should try to do that: Ford Motor Co.

The article suggests several reasons such a deal would make sense. For example, Ford manufactured small three-engine aircraft in the 1920s and 1930s, so it has some history there.

It also has the experience of its CEO, Alan Mulally, who was previously at Boeing.

Perhaps the most compelling reason is that Ford could afford to do it and still pump the kind of money into research and development needed to boost the brand.

Ford would also be the kind of domestic buyer that could help quell fears about Hawker?s future in the United States.

It may sound like a long shot, but AIN does lay out an interesting argument.

Too bad for cross-promotional purposes that the Mustang name wouldn?t be available in the skies.
