How To Find The Right Donor-Advised Fund (And Why ...

Donor-advised funds have long been a popular vehicle for charitable giving, and many in the field expect the popularity of DAFs to continue to grow as the Baby Boom generation reaches retirement. ?But as the concept has grown in popularity, so have the number of options and providers. It is therefore important that both donors and their advisors understand the types of funds available and choose the ones that will best facilitate their wealth management and charitable goals. So how do you find the best donor-advised fund for your purpose and how do you find the right provider?

The first step is understanding your options. ?There are four major types of DAF providers, each of which is explored below.

The Donor-Advised Fund Marketplace?

1. ?National DAF Organizations -?Today there are approximately 30 national organizations that sponsor DAFs. Some are the charitable arm of for-profit financial services institutions such as the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, the Schwab Charitable, and the Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program. Others are independent sponsoring organizations (i.e., they are not affiliated with a particular financial institution or charity) such as the National Philanthropic Trust and the American Endowment Foundation. Unlike most DAF options, national organizations are issue and geography agnostic, which is fine if a donor is set on where his/her funds will go, but can be a huge deterrent to those donors who could benefit from targeted philanthropic advice.

National funds most often appeal to donors because of their technological capabilities. Their websites allow donors to simply login and access grant activities and other national databases with relevant information about prospective grantee organizations (i.e. Guidestar and Charity Navigator).

National funds also provide fee calculators on their websites so that donors know exactly how much services will cost. The relative low cost of national funds is another reason donors choose them. Because of their large capacities, national funds charge up to 40% less than other DAF options, according to Wright-Violich, representative of Schwab Charitable.

National funds are also attractive to donors because they have the expertise to deal with complex gifts and they have the most sophisticated investment options. Donors with large accounts ($10 million+) have access to alternative investments, allowing them to customize their investment choices so that their DAFs have similar investment flexibility to private foundations.

2. ?Community Foundations ? There are also more than 700 community foundations that sponsor donor-advised funds, as well as hundreds of faith-based institutions. In fact, it was such institutions that originally pioneered the DAF as an alternative to the relative inefficiency of checkbook giving or the more complicated process of establishing a private foundation. ?Over the years these organizations have become very technically savvy, with many offering similar online access and investment options as the national DAFs.

What really sets community foundations apart, however, is the local expertise and community commitment. ?These foundations become very involved in their local nonprofit sector, thereby giving their donors access to extremely beneficial information on how use their funds to make an impact in their local community. ?Many community foundations even have a grant process where local nonprofits can submit grant requests that are compliled into a ?catalogue? of opportunities for donors. ?For donors interested in impacting their local community, this is by far the best option, even if the cost is a bit higher than national DAFs. ?This does not, however, mean all donations must go to the local community. ?Donors still have the flexibility to donate anywhere in the world.

3. ?Public Foundations ? Public foundations typically give nationally and sometimes internationally, often focusing on a particular issue or geographic region. Their staff members usually have regional and/or issue specific expertise that they use to assist DAF holders in finding causes that interest them. For example, the Peace Development Fund houses DAFs for donors interested in creating systemic social change throughout the Americas.

4. ?Other Charities ? Other public charities, like hospitals and universities, set up donor-advised funds within their organizations to advance their own charitable missions.

Finding The Right Donor-Advised Fund Provider

When selecting a DAF provider, with a little due diligence donors can ensure that the organization they select is one that reflects their interests and values. After all, there are almost as many different types of DAFs as there are donors.

The main reason donor-advised funds were designed was to remove the barriers to giving, by outsourcing the administration, record keeping, and due diligence on the charities. ?If you know what parts of the charitable process you want to control, what parts you want to outsource, and what you want the outcome to be, you will have the information you need to make the right choice.

There are a number of financial companies that offer auto loans. Some are considered mainstream lenders while others are non-mainstream. The latter are preferred by many people due to their reasonable terms. A less restrictive offer is one having fair conditions and a good price. Before signing the dotted lines, there is need to cross check all legal aspects. If one does not understand a particular legal stipulation, a lawyer will have to be consulted.

Prime lenders offer finance having low interest rates to people who have a history of paying debts on time. This is because such individuals are considered as credit worthy as demonstrated by their credit statements. If one has a bad credit history, one must work on improving it. This can be done by suspending the use of credit cards.

Nowadays, debt problems are the norm rather than the exception. This is because of high cost of living in the face of shrinking incomes. Individuals who are afflicted by debts should not lose hope about owning a car. This is because there financiers who do not care about credit scores.

If one is in a bad financial state, one will definitely be required to furnish a handsome down payment. One should thus begin saving for down payment earlier to avoid last minute inconveniences. Different lenders have different down payment stipulations.

Repayments must be paid on time. The finance provider will confirm whether or not a person has the capability to do this. Only an individual who has a regular source of income can make regular repayments.

Information about auto loans cannot be summarized in one article. In simple terms, an auto loan is a financial package provided by different kinds of lenders. Secondary lenders are normally the choice of many people because they have few conditions and requirements.

Jena Malone Rumored for Role in Catching Fire

The Catching Fire casting carousel has landed on Jena Malone.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the former Sucker Punch actress is a frontrunner for the key role of Johanna Mason, a District 7 Tribute who doesn't get along too well with Katniss in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games follow-up.

Jena Malone Picture

While Lionsgate has not yet commented on any casting rumors, and while names continue to be bantered about for both Johanna and Finnick Odair, no new actors or actresses have actually signed on yet.

It's unclear why. Kristen Bell is clearly perfect for Johanna and has made no secret of her passion for The Hunger Games.

Who do you think should portray Johanna Mason?

Simple Windows 7 Application

I need an application written that I can use the following way.

1) Be able to load an excel sheet of websites for example, 1-100, or unlimited number, for example 1,000,000 or bigger.
2) Be able to open these websites in order in a browser of my choice.
3) Be able to select how many websites I can open at once. For example 10 would take me 10 clicks to go through 100 and so on.
4) Be able to remember which value was opened last. For example 23.

Basically I want to create a spreadsheet of 100 lines of websites. I need them opened from 1-100 in order. I need to select how many to open at once.

93% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (276) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (256) | Rotten (20) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

Yeah, it's all that. A tent-pole cash cow for the studio, a dream come true for fans, and treat for action aficionados, 'The Avengers' comes at you as the first true "summer movie spectacular" of the 2012 season.

Yeah, it's all that. A tent-pole cash cow for the studio, a dream come true for fans, and treat for action aficionados, 'The Avengers' comes at you as the first true "summer movie spectacular" of the 2012 season.

Wonderful blink and you'll miss them comic beats in the middle of the finale's mayhem. And what glorious mayhem!

The overlong, stale experience barely raises a fast pulse, as the movie quickly stumbles into a standard film structure and doesn't even try to break free.

... The movie isn't so much a work of storytelling as it is a marathon of wish-fulfillment moments for comic book enthusiasts -- punches peppered with punchlines.

The culmination of four distinct franchises is an exciting and entertaining product.

It's the humor that's The Avengers' strength.

Whedon's clear fanboy glee is irresistibly contagious to the audience, whether the heroes and villains go at it with fisticuffs or sharp, witty dialogue.

Comic-book movie delivers the goods

By the time the utterly routine (and decidedly endless) finale rolls around, Marvel's The Avengers has unquestionably squandered the potential of its premise and its cast...

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.

The Main Event is pretty much what you'd expect ? noisy, overlong, wall-to-wall CG effects and arcane superhero lore ... Yes, it's all fairly formulaic, but on a Wow! scale never before experienced.

If you only see one movie this year over and over again, it'll probably be this one.

Hands-on: Maingear Shift running Saitek flight-simulation hardware (video)

Maingear desktops running flightsimulation hardware video

Custom PC builder Maingear had something pretty nifty up its sleeve at Pepcom tonight: versions of its desktops configured to run Saitek's flight-simulation hardware -- in this case, with a full cockpit setup. In partnership with Mad Catz, the company developed configurations of its Potenza, F131 and Shift desktops optimized to work with the Saitek line of flight-sim systems.

Tonight we saw the Shift paired with some pretty heavy-duty hardware: we're talking 18 USB connections for the full Saitek cockpit. Maingear's pro-certified system packs a Core i7 CPU clocked at up to 2.9GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics (with four GPUs), and with an experienced pilot behind the wheel, that translated into a smooth landing in Flight Simulator X. Maingear says the whole setup -- hardware controls plus the Shift desktop -- will go for $5,500 starting tomorrow. That's the top-of-the-line configuration, mind you; if your piloting aspirations are more modest, you could opt for the more affordable Potenza, which starts at $1,000. Check out a video demo below.

Researchers from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) have found a protein in the blood of pregnant women that can predict if they are likely to have a fetus that doesn't grow properly, and thus has a high risk of stillbirth and long-term health complications. The research, led by Dr. Andre Gruslin, could lead to a widely available blood test and could help develop ways for improving the outcomes of women and their children who face this risk estimated to be as many as one of every 20 pregnancies.

Dr. Gruslin's study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, focuses on a protein called Insulin Growth Factor Binding Protein 4 (IGFBP-4). While this protein has been linked to pregnancy before, this study is the first to demonstrate its important role in human pregnancy complications. A key part of the study involved examining IGFBP-4 levels in first trimester blood samples from women who participated in a large study of pregnancies and newborns called the Ottawa and Kingston (OaK) birth cohort.

Dr. Gruslin found that women with high levels of IGFBP-4 were 22 times more likely to give birth to tiny babies (defined as the smallest five per cent by weight for their gestational age), than women with normal levels of IGFBP-4. This part of the study involved a total of 72 women half with tiny babies and half with normal weight babies.

"Usually, we don't find out until later in a pregnancy that a fetus isn't growing properly, but this test can tell us in the first trimester if there's likely to be a problem," said Dr. Gruslin, a Scientist at OHRI, High Risk Obstetrician at The Ottawa Hospital and Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at uOttawa. "By identifying these high-risk pregnancies early on, we will be able to monitor these women more closely and hopefully help them deliver a healthier baby."

The IGFBP-4 blood test is still experimental, but Dr. Gruslin hopes to develop a refined version that could be made available to all pregnant women within the next couple of years. She also hopes that her studies on IGFBP-4 could lead to new approaches that would improve fetal growth in high-risk pregnancies. This condition, called Fetal Growth Restriction or Intrauterine Growth Restriction, is thought to affect three to five per cent of all pregnancies, and cause close to half of all stillbirths. Babies born with this condition also have a higher risk of developing serious health complications in infancy and childhood, as well as chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes in adulthood.

Fetal Growth Restriction is thought to occur when the placenta, which provides nourishment and oxygen for the fetus, doesn't grow properly. Research by Dr. Gruslin and others suggests that IGFBP-4 blocks the activity of a key placental growth hormone called IGF-II, which results in poor growth of the placenta and fetus. Dr. Gruslin and her team are already testing a number of strategies for targeting IGFBP-4 to improve placental and fetal growth.
