Weekly Photo Contest: Fall Colors!

Weekly Photo Contest: Fall Colors!

It's time to announce this week's photo contest -- fall colors! We're in the heart of the autumn season which means colors, leaves, and more colors. This time of year is responsible for some of the most beautiful photos ever taken, so we want to see what beautiful photos you all are taking with your iPhones.

I, personally, live in an area of the the world (central coast of California) that doesn't really have a fall season, so I'm dying to see all the photos that show me what I'm missing. Help me out iMore iPhoneographers and make me jealous!

Congrats to jwgriffin for winning last week's lens flare photo contest!

The prize: $30 iTunes gift certificate

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a $30 iTunes gift card allowing you to stock up on some of those photography apps you've been dying to buy!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Political ads gear up for final push of campaign

Trent Arena in Kettering, Ohio. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

(AP) ? The campaign ad crush has intensified and expanded in the final week of the presidential contest, with President Barack Obama, Republican challenger Mitt Romney and allied independent groups making their final, full-throated advertising pitches to voters in the major battlegrounds.

The Romney team began airing ads in Pennsylvania for the first time in the general election after venturing into Minnesota late last week, signaling a renewed effort to broaden the map of potentially competitive states. Obama's team responded in kind in both places and will go on the air in Michigan to counter a $2 million ad push there by a pro-Romney group.

A presidential campaign advertising effort likely to total more than $1 billion was on track to end just as it began, with a blizzard of TV commercials in a handful of states aimed at still-persuadable voters who may decide the election.

Obama's campaign has sunk more than $28 million into TV ads for the remainder of the contest, according to media trackers who follow the presidential race. Ohio is the top prize, seeing $6.5 million in Obama ad spending through Tuesday, Election Day.

The Obama campaign is running two ads in Ohio. In one, titled "The Problem," Romney is criticized for saying he would deal with China on the economic front while having a history of investing in companies that outsourced U.S. jobs. Another spot, "No One Was Looking," plays off Romney's comments, caught on tape at a private fundraiser in May, about the "47 percent" of Americans who don't pay federal income tax but also criticizes him on taxes, job outsourcing, Medicare and education.

The Obama campaign also is spending $5.4 million in Florida and $4.1 million in Virginia. An ad titled "Looking" was in heavy rotation in both states, while Florida voters also were seeing "Unbreakable," aimed at Jewish voters and touting Obama's commitment to Israel, and "Remember," which criticizes Romney on Wall Street regulations and taxes. Also airing is a Spanish-language version of "Determination," in which Obama makes a direct appeal for a second four years in office.

The rest of Obama's final campaign ad buy was spread across the other major swing states ? Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin ? plus Minnesota and Pennsylvania, which Romney is trying to put into play.

Romney aides point to tightening polls in Minnesota, which Obama carried by 10 percentage points in 2008. Romney's campaign had placed $17.2 million in ads for the final week by Tuesday afternoon, a figure that was expected to climb.

The Obama campaign also indicated Tuesday it would begin advertising in Michigan to counter a $2 million ad buy from the pro-Romney super political action committee Restore Our Future. The super PAC, which was founded by several former Romney aides, has run a total of $10 million in ads in Michigan. It's the only group to actively advertise in a state generally considered an Obama stronghold.

Romney's team spent $5.1 million on commercials in Ohio, where polling has shown him a few points behind Obama for most of the contest. The state's 18 electoral votes are crucial to Romney's effort to amass the 270 needed for victory. No Republican in the past 110 years has won the presidency without Ohio, and a loss there would mean Romney would have to carry virtually all the other swing states in order to prevail.

Romney also was spending $4.2 million in Florida and $2.3 million in Virginia and was advertising in all the swing states Obama was targeting. Romney was spending just $150,000 on ads in New Hampshire, compared with $2 million for Obama, and just $564,000 on ads in North Carolina, compared with $1.1 million for Obama. But campaign ad trackers expected Romney's team to boost its spending across the board in the coming days.

The Romney campaign was running a mix of ads in the final week of the race. In one, "Bringing People Together," Romney stresses the need for bipartisanship and says he worked with Democrats as governor of Massachusetts. In another, "Cabinet Members ? Humanity," women who worked in his Cabinet laud his attitudes toward the poor, working women and families.

Romney called himself "severely conservative" earlier in the campaign but since has tried to appear more moderate to appeal to women and swing voters.

His campaign continues to run a controversial ad in Ohio suggesting that Chrysler, one of the auto companies boosted by a federal bailout, was planning to move production of its Jeep line to China. The claim drew a rebuke from company CEO Sergio Marchionne, who insisted Chrysler has no plans to shift U.S.-based Jeep production overseas.

The Romney team's new ad buy in Pennsylvania, a state that had been considered safe for Obama, followed that of several independent groups supporting Romney's candidacy.

Restore Our Future announced it would advertise in Pennsylvania as part of a $20 million, multistate push in the final week. Another pro-Romney group, Americans for Job Security, was spending about $1.2 million on ads in Philadelphia, while American Crossroads, a super PAC tied to President George W. Bush's longtime political counselor Karl Rove, announced Tuesday it would spend $1.2 million on ads in the rest of the state.

American Crossroads and a companion group, Crossroads GPS, planned to spend more than $17.7 million on pro-Romney ads in the top battlegrounds.

Obama, for his part, was getting an assist from Priorities USA Action, a super PAC formed by two former White House aides. The group was spending $9.5 million on commercials in the final week, including $2.7 million in Ohio.

Chevron Chair of Gas Process Engineering Wins Malcolm McIntosh Prize

Chevron Australia congratulated the University of Western Australia?s Chevron Chair of Gas Process Engineering, Winthrop Professor Eric May, for winning the prestigious Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year.

Professor May was presented the award by the Australian Prime Minister at a special dinner at Parliament House in Canberra.

Chevron Australia managing director Roy Krzywosinski said he was delighted Professor May?s innovative research into gas process engineering had been recognised for this work which is helping improve the efficiency of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and shape Perth as a gas technology centre of excellence.

?Professor May is a key partner in our Global Technology Company?s research and development activities in Australia. He has developed breakthrough techniques for measuring gas properties under critical conditions, enabling computer models to design and optimise gas processing plants,? Mr Krzywosinski said.

?He has the rare combination of deep technical ability, teaching and organisational skills and we are very fortunate to have him working with us on a number of projects.?

Run by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Prize recognises Professor May?s outstanding early-career achievement in science that has the potential to benefit human welfare or society.

In 2009, Professor May became the first Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering (GPE). He heads natural gas research at the Centre for Energy, which covers LNG production, CO2 sequestration and gas processing. His PhD research on gas condensate phase behaviour resulted in an international patent and the UWA prize for making the most significant contribution to his field.

In 2010, he was named the Western Australian Early Career Scientist of the Year and in 2009, he won the Australian National Metrology Institute prize for his contributions to gas metrology.

Chevron has been a major partner of the Chair in GPE and recently extended its contract to a $5.75 million five-year fixed term agreement to endow the Chair in perpetuity.

The investment is part of Chevron?s global University Partnership Program, which partners with universities around the world to foster academic excellence, research capacity and to build key relationships.

News sites knocked out as data center floods

When you see a website go down, the blame usually falls on hackers or, more often, software bugs. We don't often think of the Web as having a physical existence, but sure enough, Sandy has shown that nature can impact websites with greater force than any team of malicious code wizards can summon up.

Pfizer, Avon Products Inc. and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., which were due to report Tuesday, will announce results Thursday. Thomson Reuters, also originally scheduled for Tuesday, will report Friday. NRG and McGraw-Hill Cos. will also report on Friday instead of Wednesday.

More companies delaying their announcements:

? Power provider Entergy Corp. will report on Nov. 5 instead of Tuesday.

Flooring and ceiling maker Armstrong World Industries Inc. posted its third-quarter results, but rescheduled its conference call to a later date.

Liberty Mutual Holding Co. canceled its conference call scheduled for Tuesday and said its financial results will be available on its web site as soon as possible.

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago are closed Monday and it appears increasingly likely they will close Tuesday as well. Trading on the NYSE was last closed on Sept. 11, 2001. The last time it closed for a weather event was in 1985, when Hurricane Gloria hit the East Coast.

If the exchange stays closed Tuesday, it would be the first weather-related consecutive-day closing since 1888, when a blizzard left drifts of snow as high as 40 feet in New York.

Hurricane Sandy strengthened before dawn Monday and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York ? putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential to wreak havoc over an 800-mile area, from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Parts of lower Manhattan near the Financial District are under mandatory evacuation orders. By midday Monday water from New York harbor was already coming over barriers at Battery Park, just south of the New York Stock Exchange.

Those conditions are expected to worsen over the next two days as the storm surge intensifies.

The Reference Frame: Preons probably can't exist

Don Lincoln is the star of several cute Fermilab videos in which he explains various issues in particle physics. He's also authored several related texts for Fermilab Today.

He chose a much more controversial topic, namely preons, for his fresh article in the Scientific American:

The Inner Life of Quarks
Preons are hypothetical particles smaller than leptons and quarks that leptons and quarks are made out of. But can there be such particles?

At first sight, the proposal seems natural and may be described by the word "compositeness". Atoms were not indivisible, as the Greek word indicated, but they had smaller building blocks ? the nucleus and the electron. The nuclei weren't indivisible, either ? they had protons and neutrons inside. The protons and neutrons weren't indivisible ? they have quarks inside.

Why shouldn't this process continue? Why shouldn't there be smaller particles inside quarks? Or inside the electron and other leptons?

Many people who pose this question believe that it is a rhetorical question and they don't expect any answer. Instead, they overwhelm you with detailed speculations about the possible composition of quarks and leptons while they possess lots of wishful thinking when they believe that all the problems they encounter are just details that can be overcome.

(Pati and Salam introduced preons for the first time in 1974. One of the other early enough particular realizations of preons were "rishons" by Harari, Shupe, and a young Seiberg, which means "primary" in Hebrew. I guess that prazdrojs and urquells would be the Czech counterparts. The terminology describing preons has been much more diverse than the actual number of promising ideas coming from this research. The names for "almost the same thing" have included prequarks, subquarks, maons, alphons, quinks, Rishons, tweedles, helons, haplons, Y-particles, and primons.)

However, the question above is a very good, serious question and it actually has an even better answer that explains why.

Mass scales and length scales

Since the mid 1920s and realizations due to Louis de Broglie, Werner Heisenberg, and a few others, we've known about a fundamental relationship between the momentum of a particle and the wavelength of a wave that is secretly associated with it:\[

\lambda = \frac{2\pi \hbar}{p}.

\] You may use units of mature particle physicists in which \(\hbar=1\). In those units, you may omit all factors of \(\hbar\) because they're equal to one and the momentum has the same dimension as the inverse length. Note that adult physicists also tend to set \(c=1\) because the speed of light is such a natural "conversion factor" between distances and times that has been appreciated since Einstein's discovery of special relativity in 1905.

In those \(\hbar=c=1\) units, energy and momentum (and the mass) have the same units, and space and time have the same units, too. The first group is inverse to the second group. Particle physicists love to use \(1\GeV\) for the energy (and therefore also momentum and mass); the inverse \(1\GeV^{-1}\) is therefore a unit for distances and times. One gigaelectronvolt is approximately the rest mass of the proton, slightly larger than the kinetic and potential energies of the quarks inside the proton; the inverse gigaelectronvolt interpreted as a distance is relatively close to the radius of the proton.

At any rate, the de Broglie relationship above says that the greater momentum a particle has, the shorter the wave associated with it is. Similarly, the periodicity of the wave obeys\[

\Delta t = \frac{2\pi\hbar}{E}

\] where \(E\) is the energy. The phase of the wave returns to the original value after a period of time that is inversely proportional to the energy. Now, it is sort of up to you whether \(E\) is the total energy that contains the latent energies \(E=mc^2\) or whether these terms are removed. If you want a fully relativistic description and you're ready to create and annihilate particles, you obviously need to include all the terms such as \(E=mc^2\).

On the other hand, if you study a non-relativistic system, it may be OK to remove \(E=mc^2\) from the total energy and consider \(mv^2/2\) to be the leading kinetic contribution to the energy. That's how we're doing it in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. These two conventions differ by a time-dependent reparameterization of the phase of the wave function (which isn't observable),\[

\psi_\text{relativistic}(\vec x,t) = \psi_\text{non-relativistic}(\vec x,t) \cdot \exp(-i\cdot Mc^2\cdot t/ \hbar)

\] where \(M\) is the total rest mass of all the particles. The relativistic wave function's phase is just rotating around much more quickly than the non-relativistic one.

Preons don't explain any patterns

Fine. Let's return to compositeness and preons. When you conjecture that leptons and quarks have a substructure, you want this idea to lead to exciting consequences. For example, you want to explain why there are many types (flavors) of leptons and quarks out of a more economic basic list of preonic building blocks. It's not a necessary condition for preons to exist but it would be nice and sort of needed for the idea to be attractive.

This goal doesn't really work with preons. Note that it did work with quarks; that's how Gell-Mann discovered or invented quarks. There were many hadrons and the idea that all these particles were composed of quarks was actually able to explain a whole zoo of hadrons ? particles related to the proton and neutron, including these two ? out of a more economic list of types of quarks.

Gell-Mann's success can't really be repeated with the preons. The list of known leptons and quarks is far from "minimal" but it is not sufficiently complicated, either. Quarks have three colors under \(SU(3)_c\). And both leptons and quarks are typically \(SU(2)_W\) doublets. And both leptons and quarks come in three generations.

These are three ways in which there seems to be a "pattern" in the list of types of quarks and leptons; three directions in which the lists of quarks and leptons seem to be "extended". But none of them may be nicely explained by preons. First, you can't really explain why there are \(SU(2)_W\) doublets or \(SU(3)_c\) triplets. Whatever elementary particles you choose, they must ultimately carry some nonzero \(SU(2)_W\) and \(SU(3)_c\) charges ? and the charges of the doublets and triplets are really the minimal ones (the simplest representations) so whatever the preons are, they can't really be simpler than quarks or leptons.

(Here I am assuming that the gauge bosons and gauge fields aren't "composite". The possibility of their compositeness is related to preons and the discussion why it's problematic would be similar to this one but it would differ in some important details. The conclusion is that composite gauge bosons are even more problematic than preons.)

Also, you won't be able to produce three families out of a "simpler list of preons". To produce exactly three families, you need something that comes in three flavors, i.e. a particle of "pure flavor" that has three subtypes and that binds to other particles to make them first- or second- or third-generation quarks or leptons. But there must still be other particles that carry the weak and strong charges so the result just can't be simpler.

The comments above were really way too optimistic. The actual problems with the "diversity of the bound states" that you get out of preons are much worse. Much like there are hundreds of hadron species, you typically predict hundreds of bound states of preons. Moreover, they should allow multiple arrangements of the preons' spins, they should be ready to be excited, and they should produce much more structured bound states. None of these things is observed and the predicted structure just doesn't seem to have anything to do with the observed, rather simple, list of quark and lepton species.

But there exists a problem with preons that is even more serious: their mass.

If it makes any sense to talk about them as new particles, they must have some intrinsic rest mass, much like quarks and leptons. What can the mass be? We may divide the possibilities to two groups. The masses may either be smaller than \(1\TeV\) or greater than \(1\TeV\). I chose this energy because it's the energy that is slightly smaller than the LHC beams and that is already "pretty nicely accessible" by the LHC collider. Maybe I should have said \(100\GeV\) but let's not be too picky.

If the new hypothetical preons are lighter than \(1\TeV\), then the new hypothetical particles are so light that the LHC collider must be producing them rather routinely. If that were so, they would add extra bumps and resonances and corrections and dilution to various charts coming from the LHC. Those graphs would be incompatible with the Standard Model that assumes that there are no preons, of course. But it's not happening. The Standard Model works even though it shouldn't work if the preons were real and light.

So we're left with the other possibility, namely that preons are heavier than \(1\TeV\) or \(100\GeV\) or whatever energy similar to the cutting-edge energies probed by the LHC these days. But that's even worse because the very purpose of preons is to explain quarks and leptons as bound states of preons ? and the known quarks and leptons are much lighter than \(1\TeV\).

To get a \(100\MeV\) strange quark, to pick a random "mediocre mass" example, the rest mass of preon(s) inside the quark, several \(\TeV\), would have to be almost precisely cancelled by other contributions to the mass and energy, with the accuracy better than 1 in 10,000. Clearly, the extra terms can't be kinetic energy which is positively definite: the compensating terms would have to be types of negative (binding) potential energy.

But it's extremely unlikely for the energy to be canceled this accurately, especially if you expect that the cancellation holds for many different bound states of preons (because many quarks and leptons are light).

Note that the virial theorem tells us that in non-relativistic physics, it's normal that the kinetic energy and the potential energy are of the same order. For example, for the harmonic oscillator with the \(kx^2/2\) potential energy, the average kinetic energy and the average potential energy are the same. For the Kepler/Coulomb problem, \(V\sim - k/r\), and the kinetic energy is \((-1/2)\) times the (negative) potential energy. More generally,\[

2\langle E_{\rm kin}\rangle = -\sum_{m=1}^N \langle \vec F_m\cdot \vec r_m\rangle

\] and if the potential goes like \(V\sim k r^n\), then \[

\langle E_{\rm kin} \rangle =\frac{n}{2} \langle V\rangle.

\] If you need the potential energy to cancel, you have to assume \(n=-2\). But the attractive potentials \(-1/r^2\) are extremely unnatural in 3+1 dimensions where \(-1/r\) is the only natural solution to the Poisson-like equations you typically derive from quantum field theories. You won't be able to derive them from any meaningful theory. Moreover, relativistic corrections will destroy the agreement even if you reached one. I was assuming that the motion of preons may be represented by non-relativistic physics ? because the preons are pretty heavy and at relativistic speeds, they would be superheavy. If you assume that they're heavy and relativistic (near the speed of light), you will face an even tougher task to compensate their relativistically enhanced kinetic energy.

Even if you fine-tuned some parameters to get a cancellation, it will probably not work for other preon bound states. The degree of fine-tuning needed to obtain many light bound states is probably amazingly high. And we're just imposing a few conditions ? the existence of light bound states that may be called "leptons and quarks". We should also impose all other known conditions ? e.g. the non-existence of all the other bound states that the preon model could predict and the right interactions of the bound states with each other and with other particles ? and if we do so, we find out that our problems are worse than just a huge amount of fine-tuning. We simply won't find any working model at all even if we're eager to insert arbitrarily fine-tuned parameters.

If you think about the arguments above, you are essentially learning that you shouldn't even attempt to explain light elementary particles ? those that are lighter than the energy frontier, e.g. the energy scale that is being probed by the current collider ? as composites. It can never really work. Quarks and leptons are much lighter than the LHC beam energy and because no sign of compositeness (involving new point-like particles) has been found, it really means that there can't be any.

Compositeness has done everything for us

So while the idea of compositeness is responsible for many advances in the history of physics, nothing guarantees that such "easy steps" may be done indefinitely. In fact, it seems likely that there won't be another step of this sort although some bold proposals that the top quark etc. could still be composite exist and are marginally compatible with the known facts.

After all, wouldn't you find it painful if the progress in physics were reduced to repeating the same step "our particles are composed of even smaller ones" that you would repeatedly and increasingly more mechanically apply to the current list of particles? The creativity in physics would be evaporating.

There exists a sense in which quarks and leptons are composite and the counter-arguments above are circumvented. In string theory, a lepton or a quark is a string. That means that you may interpret each such elementary particle as a bound state of "many string bits", pearls or beads along the string. If the number of conjectured "smaller building blocks" becomes infinite, like it is in the case of the stringy shape of an elementary particle, the cancellation between the kinetic and potential energy may become totally natural.

Despite the inner structure of elementary particles, string theory has an explanation why there are massless (or approximately massless, in various approximations) particles in the stringy spectrum. To some extent, this masslessness is guaranteed by having the "critical spacetime dimension" \(D=10\) or \(D=26\) for the superstring and bosonic string case, respectively. Well, string theory circumvents another problem we mentioned, too. We said that the kinetic energy is positive and the sum of all such positive terms must be positive, too. However, string theory uses the important fact that the sum of all positive integers equals \(-1/12\) which provides us with a very natural opportunity to cancel infinitely many terms although all of them seem to be positive.

Comparing preons and superpartners

The LHC hasn't found traces of any new particles beyond those postulated by the Standard Model of particle physics yet. However, that doesn't mean that all proposals for new physics are in the same trouble. In particular, I think it's important to explicitly compare preons with superpartners predicted by the supersymmetry.

At some point in the discussion above, I mentioned that preons could be either lighter or heavier than \(1\TeV\). The case of "light new particles" is generally excluded by the LHC (and previous experiments) because we would have already produced these new particles if they existed and if they were light.

The case of preons heavier than \(1\TeV\) was problematic because their "already high mass" must have been accurately cancelled by some negative contributions to the total energy/mass of the bound states and the negative potential energy required to do so seemed impossible, fine-tuned, and generally hopeless.

But the case of superpartners heavier than \(1\TeV\) doesn't have any problems of this sort. No supersymmetry phenomenologist really has any "rock solid" argument of this sort that would imply that the gluino is lighter than \(1\TeV\) or heavier than \(1\TeV\). We just don't know, these new particles may be discovered at every moment, and even at several \(\TeV\) or so, they still immensely improve the situation with the fine-tuning of the Higgs mass etc.

So while preons are pretty much completely dead ? because you just can't construct light particles out of heavy ones, if I oversimplify just a tiny bit ? superpartners remain immensely viable and well-motivated. The superpartners may still be rather light ? the lower bound on their mass are often significantly lower than the lower bounds on other particles' masses in models of new physics ? but there's nothing wrong about their being much heavier, either.

Much like in many texts, it's important not to become a dogmatic advocate of some ideas you decide to "love" in the first five minutes of your research. You could fall in love with the preons. Except that if you impartially study them in much more detail, you find out that this paradigm doesn't really agree with the known features of the world of particles well and some clever enough arguments may actually exclude rather vast and almost universal classes of such models. You should never become a blinded advocate of a theory who becomes blind to arguments of a certain type, e.g. the negative ones that unmask a general disease of your pet theory.

Preons are pretty much hopeless while other models of new physics remain extremely well motivated and promising.

And that's the memo.

Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes off Canadian coast

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted its tsunami advisory for Hawaii Sunday morning just before 4 a.m. local time, three hours after downgrading from a warning and less than six hours after the waves first hit the islands.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

Tsunami Warning Center officials said wave heights were diminishing in Hawaii, though swimmers and boaters should be careful of strong or unusual currents. The biggest waves ? about 5 feet (1.5 meters)high ? appeared to hit Maui.

There were no immediate reports of damage, though one person died in a fatal crash near a road that was closed because of the threat near Oahu's north shore.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said the state was lucky to avoid more severe surges.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

In Hawaii, the tsunami warning spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party. In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.

In Alaska, the wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches (10 centimeters), much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake.

Youth empowering

Achara Deboonme
The Nation October 28, 2012 1:00 am

With 90 per cent of the new job-seekers living in the developing world and unemployment youth rates across Asia forecast to steadily climb through 2017 - more than 14 per cent for Southeast Asian countries - it is clear to see why the alarms have begun to sound.

John B Trew, Youth Employment Specialist at Plan International, a UK charity, says putting greater emphasis on equipping the youth with necessary knowledge and skills is a must for the developing world.

"The Arab Spring is clear evidence of the transformational power that unemployed youth wield and it has been a decisive wake-up call for policy-makers. Idle and disenfranchised youth can overnight usher in social and economic unrest reverberating throughout global markets. High unemployment is the spark that has brought swarms of youth into the streets demanding greater attention and recognition of their plight," Trew said in document handed out by Plan.

Operating in 14 countries in Asia, Plan has provided vocational training to 10,000 youths who were unemployed, and aims to provide training to an additional 40,000 youth in the next five years.

This year, the charity and Accenture have furthered their cooperation in this area, targeting to benefit 7,000 youth in Thailand and Indonesia for a three-year period with a US$3.65-million grant.

In Thailand, they are targeting 2,700 of the most disadvantaged youth in the Northern (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai), Eastern (Chon Buri and Rayong) and Southern (Phang-Nga and Phuket) regions.

The training delivered will utilise Plan expertise and experience in delivering demand-led skill-training in the region. The training is very much focused on the end result of ensuring employment for the trainees and caters to the needs of both youth and business. Training will be delivered in cooperation with local educational institutes and this will involve transfer of successful methodologies to these institutes. Where possible and appropriate, local experts will be identified and engaged in the creation of materials and resources, though Plan is committed to leveraging the best available resources to implement the programme. There is already significant experience within Plan Asia and a technical vocational education and training specialist has been recruited by Plan to lead the regional programme and provide technical support to all programmes, including Thailand. In Vietnam, 8,000 youth have been trained and given employment.

Here, training is designed to respond to the needs of young people based on rigorous situational analysis. Additional educational programmes are developed, such as entrepreneurship skills training for youth in mountainous areas, skills training and job-matching in Bangkok and supporting early childhood and primary education.

To effectively address the issue of youth unemployment, there are many issues that need to be tackled, from financial inclusion, effective national and global policies, appropriate education, enhancing the use of ICT in content and delivery of education and, of course, in creating the job opportunities for youth. The engagement of the private sector is a critical component of success and the most successful youth employment programmes that Plan runs involve close relationships with businesses.

"We will be approaching Thai companies to work with us in addressing this issue and would want to work with them to be able to address their business needs with regard to talent supply and staffing, while at the same time identifying productive and decent work for our target group. In this we gain a 'win-win' for both youth and business in Thailand. To start with, Plan Thailand and Accor are piloting the training of six young people [by Accor] in the hospitality industry with the view to getting employed by Accor hotels.

"We welcome business involvement in many of our initiatives and we would be happy to discuss ways of becoming involved. We firmly believe that by working with the private sector in partnership we can match business goals with development goals, creating greater societal impact more efficiently," Plan Thailand said in a written answer to The Nation's question.

Plan Thailand also works with children across the country in the areas of child protection and in the prevention of child labour. Integrated into the other programmes are financial literacy and comprehensive sexuality education.

To Jill Huntley, Accenture's senior director of corporate citizenship, this project is part of the global corporate citizenship initiative "Skills to Succeed" that was launched in 2009 to build skills that enable people around the world to participate in and contribute to the economy.

"Skills have become a key driver of economic empowerment for individuals and communities alike. In a rapidly changing world with competitive workforce pressures, the need is greater than ever to have the right skills to build confidence and capabilities that will open doors to employment in emerging and mature markets. At the same time, training aligns with the main focus for our company: training and developing people to progress in their careers and achieve higher levels of performance," she said.

Aside from Plan, the initiative is exercised with other strategic partners. Today, Accenture has more than 200 collaborative initiatives around the world, against 80 in 2009. Some of the non-profit organisations and NGOs it works with include Save The Children, Ashoka, Junior Achievement, VSO, Conexao, NetHope, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Youth Business International.

Thanks to a shared vision, Plan committed close to $2 million over a three-year period in 2011 to help provide more than 3,500 underprivileged young people with the skills to find employment. The $3.65-million grant followed the initiative, to expand efforts from India and Vietnam into Thailand and Indonesia.

"'Skills to Succeed' inspires our people and gives us an opportunity to create sustained impact in our communities. In 2010, we announced that, by 2015, 'Skills to Succeed' initiatives will equip 250,000 people around the world with skills to get a job or build a business. By the end of fiscal 2011, we had already equipped more than 160,000 people - nearly two-thirds of our goal of 250,000 people - with workplace and/or entrepreneurial skills," Huntley added.

How To Think Correctly About Money | All About Finance

Posted by Ian L. Allen on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

Having to deal with money and finances is an inescapable fact of modern life. You should know as much as you can in order to make excellent decisions about money. This article will get you up to speed on important issues concerning personal finance.

Once you take out tax income and expenses you should be met with your current budget. Start by making a list of all of your monthly income. This should include salary, rental income, child support, alimony, and any other sources available to you. Your expenses should be the amount of your monthly income or lower, so you do not go over the amount you earn each month.

Writing down your expenses is the next thing that you need to do. Be sure to write down all the expenses that your household has in a month. You should account for each and every dollar. Really try to be as complete as possible. Include money spent dining out or on fast food in your grocery bills. When it comes to your auto expenses, be sure to include gas as well as your insurance and maintenance costs. Divvy up expenses that do not occur as often to compute a monthly dollar amount. Minor or incidental expenses count, too, so make sure to include babysitters, storage unit rentals or anything else. If you have an accurate list, you will be able to make a better budget.

Once you have a solid record of your income and expenditures, it is necessary for you to design a concrete budget. Identify expenses that are not absolutely necessary. For instance, cut out fast food if you buy it regularly.

It is important, now more than ever, to save money where you can. A good starting point is tackling high utility bills. Give consideration to replacing your less energy efficient hot water tank with a tankless water heater, which only heats water as needed. Call a plumber if you need to, to ensure that there are no leaks in your water system. A lot of water is used up when you use a dishwasher. You should wait until it is full before you turn it on.

Buy appliances that excel in saving energy instead of using appliances that use too much energy. The lowered operational costs of energy efficient appliances reduces the amount you spend on utilities. The money you save will build up quickly. Unplug appliances that feature indicator lights, as they use electricity even when they are not in use.

Repairing your roof and upgrading insulation can ensure that you get the maximum benefit from your heating and cooling systems. While these upgrades cost some money in the present, they can save tons of money in the future.

Using this advice, you can save money, and keep your finances at a more manageable level. An expensive upgrade can save a lot of money in lower electricity or water bills. This will help you gain control of your household expenses in the future.

If you need back taxes help, consult a significant company. They can give you aid by giving advice and information about it. To help you with that, check this link.

Queen's school dinner at Drapers' Academy, Harold Hill | Education ...

The Queen had school dinner at a new academy in Romford, where chips and turkey twizzlers were not on the menu.

She was visiting Drapers? Academy in Harold Hill to officially open the new ?25m state school.

Her Majesty was served from a menu which included ham hock terrine, canon of lamb and Dauphinoise potatoes.

Principal Matthew Slater, in a reference to Jamie Oliver?s campaign for healthier school meals, joked they did not serve the turkey foodstuff.

The school canteen was transformed to include linen table cloths and flowers, with wine served for adults.

It opened last month with most of the funding to build it coming from The Drapers? Company and the University of London?s Queen Mary College.

Mr Slater said: ?We don?t serve chips. Our biggest seller is the carvery meal.

?We try and give them healthy options. If they eat well, they will concentrate better in class.?

The Queen was also given a tour of the school and watched science experiments and pupils performing a scene from the musical Little Shop Of Horrors.
