Methane Making An Appearance In Pa. Water Supplies

A local well pad in Bradford County has been leaking gas since mid-May, according to state regulators. Gas has been bubbling into this nearby creek since about the same time.

It's thought that a leaky pipe that connects the surface to the deep underground gas reservoir is responsible for the methane escape. The gas has made its way into local streams like this one.

Flammable methane continues to bubble up from the ground in 15 to 20 spots on the Leightons' property.

Mike and Nancy Leighton's problems began on May 19, just as Mike was settling in to watch the Preakness Stakes. A neighbor in Leroy Township, Pa., called Mike and told him to check the water well located just outside his front door.

"I said, 'I'll be down in 15 minutes.' I wanted to see the race," Leighton said. But as the horses were racing, Leighton's well was overflowing. Typically, there's between 80 to 100 feet of head space between the top of the well and its water supply. But when Leighton went outside, the water was bubbling over the top.

Down the road, Ted and Gale Franklin's water well had gone dry. When water started coming out later that week, the liquid was "black as coal," according to Gale.

Since then, both families have been dealing with methane-contaminated water supplies, as well as dozens of mysterious, flammable gas puddles bubbling up on their properties.

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection blames a nearby hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, operation. It says methane gas has leaked out of the well, which is operated by Chesapeake Energy, and into the Leightons' and Franklins' water supplies.

The danger goes beyond contaminated water. In a letter to both families detailing test results and preliminary findings, state regulators wrote that "there is a physical danger of fire or explosion due to the migration of natural gas water wells." Chesapeake has installed ventilation systems at the two water wells, but the letter warns, "it is not possible to completely eliminate the hazards of having natural gas in your water supply by simply venting your well."

Nancy Leighton said the letter made her "a little nervous," pointing out that both families heat their homes with wood stoves and plan to do so this winter, regardless of whether the gas leaks have gone away.

"What are we going to do? We don't have any other options," Gail Franklin says.

A Methane Gas Express Elevator

So how did this happen?

The whole thing gets a bit confusing, because over and over again, the drilling industry has said fracking hasn't been linked to water contamination. Yet, here's a case where the state says a nearby natural gas well is to blame.

Here's why they're both right.

To frack a well, drillers crack up shale rock with explosives, then flush gas out of the ground with millions of gallons of fluid. For a long time, the fear has been that the chemicals are shot deep underground, then they and the gas find a way to seep back up a mile through the rock and the water supply.

That hasn't been conclusively documented, but what has been proven is something much more basic, and closer to the surface. It's not the technique of fracking ? it's the pipe the gas uses to go from point A to point B that can be a problem.

Penn State University geologist David Yoxtheimer has been studying this issue, which is called methane migration. He explained that when a well is leaky, it becomes a methane gas express elevator. "Gas wants to migrate up," he said. "It's lighter. It's less dense. It finds itself trapped in these shallower, more porous formations. And during the drilling process, you can go down through these shallow formations, and as you're drilling through, suddenly you've created a conduit for those gases to escape."

A shoddy cement job is usually what's to blame. Gas wells are lined by a series of steel pipes surrounded by cement. And if the cement pour is rushed or poorly done, methane is going to get out of the well and into the ground. That's what state regulators say happened in 2009 in the same northeast Pennsylvania county where the Leightons and Franklins are currently dealing with stray gas.

'We Want Things Fixed'

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection fined Chesapeake Energy $900,000 for contaminating 16 families' water supplies. The company disputed the state's conclusion, but agreed to the fine ? the largest environmental penalty in Pennsylvania history.

Since then, Pennsylvania regulators put much tougher drilling standards in place, in order to minimize methane leaks.

They mandated higher-quality cement and pipes in gas wells, among other changes. Chesapeake spokesman Michael Kehs said the company has improved its standards. He says the problem affecting the Leightons and Franklins is an "isolated incident," adding, "in this particular case there was a unique problem with a particular piece of equipment that was highly unusual."

Chesapeake is paying for water filtration devices at both families' homes, and in a statement said the malfunction that created the leak "has been identified and corrected. The surface expressions of methane have dramatically abated and are almost gone."

But Mike Leighton, who still has bubbling puddles in his yard, said he's fed up. "The newspapers keep minimizing the damage here, but it's here," said Leighton, pointing out bubbling gas puddles on his property. "And people think we're radicals, but we're not. We're just upset about the condition of our property, and we want things fixed.

"I want my real estate back to where it was before," he says. "And right now, it ain't worth dirt."

Amy Emmert, a policy adviser with the American Petroleum Institute, maintains that the leaky wells are few and far between. "A typical natural gas well is constructed with 3 million pounds of steel and cement," she said.

Still, it only takes one small hole, or one faulty piece of equipment, or one weak chunk of cement, to create problems on the surface.

(AP) ? Business is down because of an Egyptian security clampdown, but smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border keep operating under the supervision of Gaza's Hamas rulers.

The militant Hamas had hoped the Islamists who took charge in Egypt this summer ? fellow members of the region's Muslim Brotherhood ? would swiftly turn the shared border crossing into a free-flowing trade route, ending Gaza's five-year isolation from the world and making the tunnels obsolete.

However, a senior Hamas official acknowledged that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi hasn't promised dramatic change, even as he tries to distance himself from the policy of his ousted predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, of keeping Gaza sealed.

"I think it's a mistake that some people expected a lot from the new political regime (in Egypt)," Ghazi Hamad, deputy foreign minister of Gaza and a key Hamas point man with Egypt, said in an interview this week. "Egypt is a big country and Gaza is not the only problem for Egypt."

Gaza became a bigger problem for Egypt after an Aug. 5 attack in which gunmen in the Sinai Peninsula, next to Gaza, killed 16 Egyptian soldiers. That raised new worries about the smuggling of weapons and militants through border tunnels, and Egypt is investigating whether the assailants had ties to Gaza.

Hamas denies anyone from Gaza was involved and said it is cooperating with the Egyptian investigation, but senior Hamas figures also complained about a subsequent Egyptian border clampdown.

Despite the Egyptian security sweep, Morsi has assured Hamas leaders Egypt wants a new border regime. Some in Hamas and even some Egyptian officials raised the idea of a free trade zone between Egypt and Gaza.

However, open cross-border trade could trigger unintended consequences. Stronger Gaza-Egypt ties would deepen Gaza's economic and political separation from the West Bank, located on the opposite side of Israel, and undercut already remote chances of melding the two areas into a Palestinian state.

Trade ties could also hurt Egypt's own attempts to broker a unity deal between Hamas and its main rival, West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. An open border to Egypt would boost Gaza's hobbled economy, strengthen Hamas and might make reconciliation even less desirable for the Islamic militants who balked in the past at giving Abbas a renewed say in Gaza for the sake of unity. Hamas seized the territory from Abbas by force in 2007.

Hamad, the Gaza official, said that because of such constraints, he expects Egypt to offer only limited improvements on the border for now, such as allowing more people to cross and sending more electricity and fuel. A Hamas delegation left for Cairo on Saturday to discuss such arrangements.

"They want to move step by step," he said of his Egyptian counterparts. "They move very carefully."

Last month, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood said Morsi will not lend a hand to suffocating Gaza, but was evasive when asked whether Egypt would allow regular trade.

In one hopeful sign for Gaza, the Rafah passenger terminal, Gaza's gate to Egypt and the world, will resume operating six hours a week, starting Sunday, a Gaza border official and the Egyptian news agency MENA said. After the Sinai attack, Egypt had closed the terminal for several days, then allowed only limited movement.

In a next step, Hamas wants Egypt to keep Rafah open for 12 hours per day, up from eight now, to reduce what Gaza officials say is a backlog of 40,000 people wanting to cross. Hamas also wants Egypt to strike names from a blacklist of thousands of Gazans barred from entering Egypt. Hamad said Egypt promised to study the requests.

Amid the uncertainty, tunnels remain Gaza's safety net.

The underground passages ? usually several hundred meters (yards) long, with white tents marking their entry points ? served as Gaza's lifeline during the harshest days of the Israeli-Egyptian blockade after the Hamas takeover.

After Israel resumed shipping consumer goods to Gaza two years ago, tunnel operators shifted to building materials and other goods restricted by Israel.

Since the Sinai attack, Egypt has closed dozens of tunnel openings. But previous security crackdowns failed because smugglers recoup, and an Egyptian security official said he expected a similar outcome this time.

One Gaza smuggler said Egyptian troops sealed his tunnel immediately after the attack, and he was told by his partners in Egypt that far fewer smuggled goods are now reaching the border because of a heavy troop presence in Sinai.

At some point, the Egyptians will ease up and he'll try to reopen his tunnel, said the 41-year-old who, like others interviewed about tunnel operations spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions.

Hamas has turned the border zone into a bonded area with checkpoints, where it levies taxes on goods coming through. On a recent afternoon this week, trucks loaded with cement and gravel from Egypt stopped at a Hamas-run gate, paid their fees and headed into the border town of Rafah.

Underground travel between Gaza and Sinai, a lawless haven for militants and smugglers, is also continuing.

A 32-year-old Gaza man, who returned from medical treatment in Egypt several days before the Sinai attack, said sneaking under the border is "as easy as crossing the street." Travelers are vetted by Hamas security, walk for about five minutes through a short tunnel and pay $25 in fees, he said.

Since the Egyptian clampdown, only one of several passenger tunnels is operating, said a Gaza fish importer and frequent traveler. Returning to Gaza earlier this week, he was interrogated by Hamas security and had to pay $300 in bribes to Egyptian officers, triple the usual amount, he said.

Underground trade, with an estimated volume of hundreds of millions of dollars a year, has dropped by more than 50 percent since the Egyptian clampdown, said a Hamas security official.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said that Gaza needs the tunnels until Egypt can offer trade above ground, but that Hamas promises to monitor closely who and what gets into Egypt. "When the (Rafah) terminal is opened for goods and passengers, these tunnels are going to be completely sealed," he said.

That may be a long way off.

Hamad said Egypt is concerned that full trade ties will deepen the Palestinian split and provide an opening for Israel to "unload" Gaza. Israel occupied Gaza for 38 years, until a withdrawal in 2005, and many in the international community still hold Israel partially responsible for Gaza because it controls access.

"We talk to them many times. We assure them that Gaza is part of the Palestinian homeland. Gaza is not part of Egypt," he said.

Question: Are the avatars in My World humans? Or are there species? :)

Finished my profile, but I'm wondering what you'd like the character name (real or myworld or both) to be and the thumbnail picture (real/myworld)?

Small turn out in Egypt anti-Morsi rallies

Several hundred protesters rallied on Friday in Cairo against President Mohamed Morsi, a much smaller turn out than hoped for by activists bent on challenging the country's first Islamist president.

In Cairo's Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands rallied to overthrow president Hosni Mubarak early last year, several dozen of Morsi's opponents briefly clashed with his supporters before withdrawing, witnesses said.

"Morsi has men backing him," his victorious partisans chanted. Four people were injured in the clash, including three with birdshot wounds, the official MENA news agency quoted a field medic as saying.

In northern Cairo, about 200 protesters gathered near the presidency, which Morsi occupied since his inauguration in June, chanting "down with the Supreme Guide's rule."

They were referring to the leader of the influential Muslim Brotherhood, to which Morsi belongs.

The protests take place as Morsi, who assumed office amid a power struggle with the once-ruling military, consolidates his authority while two journalists critical of the president stand trial.

The protest organisers demanded that Morsi repeal an interim constitution in which he took over the military's powers to legislate in the absence of parliament, which the army has dissolved shortly before his election.

He also sacked military chief Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and other senior army officials who had ruled the country after Mubarak's overthrow.

Brotherhood officials said they believed that the anti-Morsi protesters had hoped that the military would intervene against Morsi if mass protests broke out, repeating the scenario that forced Mubarak to resign.

The protest organisers appear to be a mix of ardent secularists and activists nostalgic for Mubarak's rule, such as television station owner and show host Tawfiq Okasha, who faces trial next month.

Okasha, whose station has been banned from broadcasting, faces charges of trying to incite Morsi's murder.

The trial of another journalist, Al-Dustour newspaper editor Islam Afifi, began on Thursday.

Afifi was briefly detained after the trial before Morsi, using his contested legislative authority, amended the law allowing detention pending a verdict for media crimes.

A Summer Wedding in Aldergrove, British Columbia

A Summer Wedding in Aldergrove, British Columbia

Nuptials don?t get much more romantic than this summer wedding in Aldergrove, British Columbia. Jillian and Dan wed on a sunny Friday afternoon at the Aldergrove Church with 130 of their friends and family members in attendance. The venue?s cool slate grey decor added a modern twist to the fun-filled summer wedding. The reception hall was beautifully decorated with gold handmade tissue garlands that the bride constructed with the help of her cousins which contributed to the luxe feel of the romantic celebration. Dinner was served at tables adorned with soft beige linens and tall vases filled with white blooms that perfectly accented the sentimental feel of the summer wedding. Guests lovingly signed the couple?s personalized guest book as they entered the grand hall and indulged in a selection of delicious sweet treats instead of a traditional wedding cake. As the night came to an end, Jillian and Dan thoughtfully handed out pretty potted violets from a local greenhouse as favours for family and friends to commemorate the day.

See all of the photos from this beautiful summer wedding below.

South Korea rules Apple and Samsung infringed patents

24 August 2012

A South Korean court has ruled that Apple and Samsung both infringed each other?s patents on mobile devices.

The court imposed a limited ban on national sales of products by both companies covered by the ruling.

It ruled that US-based Apple had infringed two patents held by Samsung, while the Korean firm had violated one of Apple?s patents.

The decision comes as a jury in California is deliberating on a patent trial between the two firms?.?

HBT: Colon suspension doesn't mean sky is falling

I have a sneaking suspicion that Bartolo Colon?s drug suspension coming a week after Melky Cabrera?s is gonna be like manna from hack commentator heaven. The story line ? and it will be treated as one, seamless story line ? is gonna break down thusly:

Angle: Here we go again! The Bay Area is once again the center of the PEDs universe!

Comment: It is true, Colon plays on one side of the San Francisco Bay and Melky plays on the other. It is also true that Jose Canseco played on one side of the San Francisco Bay and Barry Bonds played on the other. This is an accident of geography and nothing more. ?I?ll allow this as a viable angle if any evidence is revealed connecting the old Bay Area drug cases and these new ones. But that?s extremely unlikely.

There is almost certainly no connection at all between the old BALCO things and these testosterone tests. There is likely even no connection between Colon?s test and Cabrera?s. As such, linking all of these things together, or even just linking Cabrera and Colon together in some sort of grand ?the Bay Area and PEDs? kind of thinkpiece without any actual factual basis for doing so is pretty good evidence that someone is mailing in a column. It?s the equivalent of writing a story about a murder in New York and spending several paragraphs on the Son of Sam killings.

Angle: Major League Baseball has a serious drug problem and has to do something now!

Comment: I bet Tom Verducci is kicking himself for writing this story yesterday instead of tomorrow, because it?s always way better to write a ?the world is ending? trend piece when there is more than a single data point. ?But now that there are two positive drug tests involving prominent players this year ? sorry Freddy Galvis, Guillermo Mota and Marlon Byrd, you just don?t rate ? we?re twice as far along into epidemic territory as we were yesterday.

That said, I still can?t see how the fact of a positive test and a player being penalized can serve as evidence that Major League Baseball?s drug testing program is flawed. Now, maybe it is flawed. Maybe the tests are done haphazardly and too seldomly. Maybe the whole thing is a farce. But the one thing that is not evidence of that is someone getting caught. No, to make the case that the system is broken, you have to actually explain what about it is broken. To do otherwise is the same as saying that the criminal justice system is broken because that guy who robbed the liquor store was caught and punished.

Angle: The Oakland A?s are sunk/The Oakland A?s are rallying

Comment: With all apologies to Mike Krukow, this line of thinking is post-hoc nonsense. It?s not going to help the A?s to have lost Colon, but in a world where people seem to think that even Stephen Strasburg is a non-essential part of a playoff team?s roster, I have a hard time buying Bartolo Colon?s absence as the tipping point. Especially now that they have Brett Anderson back to take his place.

If the A?s lose the wild card now, people will blame Bartolo Colon being gone. If they win it, they will credit the A?s rallying around the loss and/or betrayal and/or whatever of Colon and say it was the season?s turning point. ?In reality, the A?s wild card hopes have a lot more to do with their offense, Brandon McCarthy?s health, the Tigers, the Orioles, the Angels and the Rays. ?Colon is not a serious factor for anyone except someone searching for an easy storyline.

There. Now that you?ve read that, you can ignore everything else. Isn?t that a relief?

Tennessee suspends wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers

(AP) ? Tennessee has indefinitely suspended star wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Rogers was an all-Southeastern Conference selection last year with 67 catches for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns.

The junior from Calhoun, Ga., doesn't appear on the depth chart Tennessee released Thursday for its Aug. 31 season opener with North Carolina State at the Georgia Dome. Cordarrelle Patterson, a transfer from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, likely would start in Rogers' place.

Rogers was expected to team up with Justin Hunter to form the SEC's top receiving tandem as Tennessee attempts to bounce back from a 5-7 season. Hunter caught 17 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns last year before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Sept. 17.

When most people hear cardio workout they immediately think of doing an extended session of jogging, biking, or time on the elliptical. What few people know is that weight lifting, when done properly, can be an extremely beneficial cardio workout that burns fat and promotes heart health.

Perhaps the best way to approach this is to start with a definition of what a cardio workout is. By definition, a cardio workout is an aerobic workout designed to elevate the heart rate in order to improve heart health, body weight, and oxygen stats. The main thing we have to take from this is the fact that what makes a cardio workout a ?cardio workout? is that your heart rate is increased for an extended period of time. What people fail to realize is that this stipulation of a cardio workout is easy to achieve while weight lifting if certain methods are used.

The main method used to achieve this is the implementation of something called circuit training (also known as supersets). The main idea behind this type of weight training is to minimize time between sets in order to keep one?s heart rate elevated. This would be difficult if you would be doing the same exercise due to muscle fatigue from less rest time in between sets. However, if you combine two exercises, alternating sets between the two, this lessens muscle fatigue. With less than thirty seconds between sets, the lifter?s heart rate will usually stay elevated in a proper ?cardio? range.

There are countless combinations of weight lifting exercises that can be combined in this manner. As long as you keep rest time below thirty seconds, the workout can be considered as cardio (this of course is assuming that your lifting is intense enough to raise the heart rate to the point of being a cardio workout). An excellent example of such a combination would be combining pushups and bicep curls. For example, I might do a set of twenty push-ups and immediately stand up and do a set of twelve bicep curls and then repeat. When using this as a cardio workout, we are focusing more on getting our heart rate up than actually building muscle. Therefore, it?s important to not increase your weights to the point of failure. You should be able to complete your sets without coming to muscle failure or burnout. I would recommend completing four cycles, alternating between your two workouts of choice. It?s always a good idea to take your pulse after the set of four cycles. If your heart rate is not at a desirable level, increasing weight or repetitions is a good way to solve this problem.

A question is often raised about the difference between cardio heart rates and fat burning heart rates. People often say that a ?cardio? heart rate is lower than a fat burning heart. The truth of the matter is that there isn?t a difference between the two. More simply stated, an increased heart rate will benefit one?s cardio health as well as help to burn fat. However, there is some truth to aiming for a lower rate when working out. The advantage of aiming for a slightly lower cardio heart rate is that it allows you to exercise constantly for a longer period of time. Having this consistent comfortable cardio heart rate allows for a longer exercise period with less need for rest. This translates into a more effective and efficient workout for those desiring cardio as well as fat burning results.

Doing circuit training or super sets is just one alternative to more traditional cardio methods. It carries the extra bonus of building muscle and burning fat at the same time. It can be an excellent option if you are getting bored of your regular routine and want to switch it up. In summary, choose two weight lifting exercises and alternate between the two with less than thirty seconds rest time in between them. This will keep your heart rate up for the cardio workout that is desired. Those who think that weight lifting?s only benefit is to build muscle are wrong. It can be a great cardio workout when done properly, leading to more cardio, fat burn, and results.

GOP delegates want tough talk at convention

(AP) ? Republicans heading to their party convention are eager to hear an earful about the shortcomings of President Barack Obama's record, the woeful U.S. economy and the competing visions of the two presidential candidates. What they aren't looking for is any mention of compromise, which most Americans say is necessary to get the nation back on track.

The Republicans want a party like in 1980, when the GOP ousted a Democratic president after one term.

Delegates from around the country have big dreams for the Aug. 27-30 gathering in Tampa, Fla., where Mitt Romney will accept the party's nomination and Republicans will kick off their final push to defeat Obama. They sketched out a sharp message they want to hear from speaker after speaker ? onetime White House hopefuls, GOP governors, congressional leaders and the party's top recruits angling to win a job in Washington.

Conventions are four-day slugfests directed at the opposing party and its candidate. The rhetoric is brutal, vitriolic and far from conciliatory. Some lines are memorable.

"Poor George, he can't help it ? he was born with a silver foot in his mouth," quipped Texas state treasurer Ann Richards to laughs and applause at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta in 1988. Her target was the well-heeled GOP nominee, Vice President George H.W. Bush.

Twenty years later, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accepted the Republican vice presidential nomination at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., and compared her mayoral experience in Wasilla, Alaska, to that of nominee Obama.

"I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities," she said.

The crowd roared.

Ed Cox, the chairman of the Republican Party in New York, wants speakers at the convention to echo the message that Romney delivered after he won the Wisconsin primary in April. Romney cast the election as a choice between what he called Obama's "government-centered society" and the "opportunity society" the former businessman said he would pursue as president.

"This is the crux of our message, that we are for an opportunity society of free people and free enterprise," Cox said in an interview with The Associated Press. "America has always been about people having dreams, going out and working to make them. To do that they don't want the heavy hand of government on top of them, whether it's in taxes or regulations."

The Obama administration in its first year "ignored what they were elected to do, which was to pay attention to jobs and the economy," said Cox, who has seen his share of conventions as the son-in-law of President Richard M. Nixon.

Jim McErlane, a lawyer from Chester County, Pa., said convention speakers should keep it simple.

"The economy, the economy, the economy," he said in an interview. "Jobs, jobs, jobs."

Shawn Steel, a lawyer from Palos Verdes, Calif., wants the convention to remind Americans of 1980, when Ronald Reagan accepted the nomination in Detroit and then scored a landslide victory that knocked out President Jimmy Carter and helped Republicans seize control of the Senate.

"In 1980, there was not much interest in moderating, with inflation, the state of the world, foreign policy and just the general decline of the American economy," Steel said in an interview. "People don't want to moderate. They want some really crisp answers and alternatives because this is the worst post-World War II economy in our history. It should not have gone this long. And one promise after another by this president has been broken."

The tough talk is a sharp contrast to what most Americans envision from elected leaders.

A CBS-New York Times poll from January found that 85 percent of adults think it is better for the country if Democrats and Republicans "compromise some of their positions in order to get things done," while just 11 percent said it's better if they "stick to their positions even if it means not getting as much done."

The preference for compromise held across party lines, with 80 percent of Republicans, 84 percent of independents and 89 percent of Democrats saying a little give is good for the country.

But the tough talk and division reflect how Americans vote.

In the Indiana GOP primary in May, voters rejected six-term Sen. Richard Lugar, a conservative willing to work with Democrats on foreign policy, for Richard Mourdock, who famously said: "I don't think there's going to be a lot of successful compromise. I hope to build a conservative majority in the U.S. Senate so bipartisanship becomes Democrats joining Republicans to roll back the size of government."

Moderate Republicans and Democrats in the Senate have decided to retire, with Maine's Olympia Snowe decrying the "atmosphere of polarization." This will be the last year in the Senate for Nebraska's Ben Nelson, North Dakota's Kent Conrad, Virginia's Jim Webb and Connecticut independent Joe Lieberman.

Congressional redistricting in the House has made it tougher for other moderates to survive, with conservative Democrats nearly extinct in the South and moderate Republicans disappearing in the Northeast.

Those are the Republicans unlikely to attend the convention in Tampa.
