What To Do When Your Life Is In A Rut | 21C Woman

If your life makes you feel like a hamster on a wheel, it?s time to shake things up. Many people fall into a routine and stay with it, even when it becomes unworkable. Here are a few ideas to help you identify the areas of your life that need to be changed and make those changes.

Goal Setting

Before changing anything, you must decide upon your goals. If you start off taking lots of actions withhamster in a hamster wheel no end in mind you may end up nowhere or right back where you started from. Think about where you would like to be in a year or two ? or five. Once you have established your goals, you must set up the steps necessary to attain them.

While you?re goal setting, be sure to make attainable, measurable goals. If you?re an unemployed software technician now and you want to be a millionaire next year (or even five years from now), you will have a tough time identifying the exact steps you?ll need to take to get there because your goal is too big, too vague and too impractical. Instead, it would be better to set a short term goal of finding a job, and a long term goal of having a specific, measurable, reasonable amount of money on hand to invest or grow within a specific, reasonable period of time.

Reduce Distractions

Think about some ways you can simplify your life. One of the reasons we are not progressing in life is because there is too much noise. We live during a time of many distractions. Learning how to live a simple life can lead you to a rewarding life.

Once you have a couple of reasonable, attainable goals in mind, write them down and begin determining the exact steps you will take to attain them. For example, on your goal of finding a job, some of your steps might be signing up for an online job search service, editing and perfecting your resume, assembling a good interview outfit, shining your shoes, getting a haircut, and so on.

For your goal of setting aside a nest egg, do a little research to find a good saving vehicle. Decide whether you will first open a passbook savings account, a CD, or use some other method to set aside a specific amount of your income once you begin earning.

Baby Steps

Sometimes objectives are even too big to attain at one go, and they need to be broken down into baby steps. Say you don?t have good interview clothes on hand, and you don?t have the money to purchase them.

A baby step toward the objective of assembling a good interview outfit might be to ask a friend for a loan of money or clothing, to seek out a service that will help you obtain an interview outfit, or to sell some item you now own to get money to purchase interview clothes.

Plan B

Remember that it?s always good to have a ?Plan B.? Life can throw unexpected stumbling blocks and opportunities in your path. You don?t want to be so intent on the goals you have set that you miss out on opportunities or, conversely, fall flat on your face because you weren?t paying attention to events. As you set your goals, also keep a list of ?what if?s? open and brainstorm with yourself about what you might do if your plans fall awry.

. . .

By identifying reasonable, measurable goals and the steps necessary to attain them and taking proactive steps to make your vision become reality, you can move your life forward in a satisfying way. Remember to always expect the best and always be prepared for the worst, and you will experience smooth sailing no matter where your life journey takes you.
