Sports in brief: Soccer stars picked for Team B.C.

Seven soccer players from Abbotsford have been selected to represent B.C. at upcoming national events.

Jenna Cook, captain of the Magnuson Ford Mariners FC under-16 squad in the EA Sports Premier League, has been named to the U16 women's team. She's off to the Canadian championships in Halifax next week.

Four local boys are off to Mount Pearl, Nfld. for their national tourney. Herman Gill, Elijah Sampson and Manveer Dhillon are members of the B.C. U16 team, while Gobind Amir Basra is part of the U15 squad.

Jesse March and David Parfett have been picked for the U14 boys side which will travel to Winnipeg later this month for the Canadian Soccer Association's Regional Assessment Tournament.

HEAVENLY START FOR ANGELS

The Abbotsford Angels peewee AAA boys baseball team got off to a great start to the summer, winning a pair of tournaments.

The Angels won the Lorne Upsdell Tournament in Ridge Meadows on the first weekend of July, and followed that up with a triumph at a wood bat tourney in Kamloops. The team played some great baseball and pitched well, and the defence kicked in and shut down opponents. The Angels defeated Vernon in the semis and then beat the Calgary Selects in the finals.

The team played the first league game on Tuesday night versus Ridge Meadows, and continued their fine play with a convincing 14-0 win.

BOWCOTT SIGNS WITH RAMS

Abbotsford quarterback Greg Bowcott has signed on with the Langley Rams for the upcoming B.C. Football Conference season.

Bowcott, a Rick Hansen Secondary grad, threw for 1,564 yards and 15 touchdowns in 10 games for the Hurricanes in 2009, his senior year. He earned a scholarship to Simon Fraser University and spent the past two seasons with the Clan, including a stint as starting QB in 2010.

Bowcott and the Rams open the BCFC season on Aug. 4 on the road in Kelowna against the Okanagan Sun.
