Redbox Instant app available for Google TV

Redbox Instant app available for Google TV

During CES, Redbox and Verizon mentioned Google TV among the platforms getting an app and now they've delivered. The Redbox Instant app for Google TV is in the Google Play market, however only owners of second gen hardware will be able to make full use of it. As the folks at Google TV Friends found, it can be side loaded on the Logitech Revue for example and even play previews, however it won't rent any movies. At Google I/O Redbox explained to GigaOm that support would be restricted, while showing off a newer version of the app that will be released after the Jelly Bean Google TV update hits and mentioning a Roku version on the way. Redbox's support page explains the lack of support for first generation hardware is because only newer devices have the necessary DRM support, owners of those boxes can install the app from the link below.

Florida Set To Ban The Retail Of All Drug Paraphernalia On July 1st

Image via Reddit

On July 1st,? certain drug paraphernalia will be prohibited to be sold as retail in the state of Florida. If caught, it could provide criminal penalties. The bill known as HB 49: Drug Paraphernalia was filed on 12/18/12 and was signed last week by officers and presented to? the Governor.

GENERAL BILL by Judiciary Committee ; Criminal Justice Subcommittee ; Rouson ; (CO-INTRODUCERS) Campbell ; Harrell ; Pilon ; Rogers ; Stewart ; Van Zant

Drug Paraphernalia; Prohibits retail sale of certain drug paraphernalia; provides criminal penalties.

Last Action: 05/28/2013 Signed by Officers and presented to Governor

Effective Date: July 1, 2013

Possession of drug paraphernalia (becomes drug paraphernalia once you use it for cannabis) is illegal in the state of Florida. But at least you could still purchase it buy it. Now, in Florida, you will have to head to another state to get your bongs or make your own. Find a Florida glassblower and you?ll never go bongless again. Yes, this will suck a lot for the stoners of Florida. But stoners have always been able to make a bong out of anything. The owners of headshops are really going to be hurting. I hope they make it through this. I?m sadden for them however they are going to be alright.

Advice for black women on breast cancer gene risk

CHICAGO (AP) ? New research suggests that bad genes may be responsible for more breast cancer cases in black women than has been previously known. About 1 in 5 African-American women with the disease have an inherited mutation that drastically raises their risk for breast and ovarian cancer, according to a study released Monday.

It may help explain why black women have higher rates of breast cancer at young ages, a more aggressive form of the disease, and worse survival. It doesn't mean that all black women are at risk or even that all blacks with cancer need genetic counseling or testing, said the study's leader, Dr. Jane Churpek of the University of Chicago.

Experts offer some advice about what to make of this information:

Q. What are the genes?

A. Mostly BRCA1 and BRCA2. Everyone has two copies of these genes, and a mutation in one can give a woman up to an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and up to a 54 percent risk for ovarian cancer. Sixteen other genes also can raise risk but are thought to be less common.

Q. Why might blacks have high risk?

A. African-Americans' genes are more diverse than those of many other racial and ethnic groups. Most of the mutations identified in this study were novel, or unique to each woman, Churpek said. It's possible that more detailed tests in whites and other groups might find a higher prevalence of mutations than previous studies have found in them, too.

Q. Should more black women be tested?

A. National guidelines do not specify any groups that should be tested except Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish women with breast or ovarian cancer or a close relative who has had one of those diseases. Genetic counseling should be offered to black women who develop breast cancer before age 50, who have a close relative with the disease, or who have "triple-negative" breast cancer. Triple negative means tumors that are not fueled by estrogen, progesterone or the gene that the drug Herceptin targets.

Q. What can be done if a gene mutation is found?

A. Women who find the mutation after they have breast cancer may want to consider removing both breasts or their ovaries. Those who are screened before cancer develops can consider more frequent screening and prevention measures ranging from hormone-blocking drugs to removal of breasts and ovaries. They also can let relatives know about potential family risk.

Q. Why did this study find so many more gene flaws?

A. Standard tests look for just a few common mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. The tests cost around $3,000, and insurance will often cover them if a woman has a family history suggesting high risk. A second $750 test is needed to look for a different type of genetic flaw. That test often is not done or covered by insurance.

In the Chicago study, researchers decoded, or sequenced, all 18 genes tied to breast cancer risk, so it could pick up all types of mutations in any of them.

(AP) ? Three delays, 5? innings and another sensational outing by Clay Buchholz ? albeit a short one.

Buchholz allowed two hits in an abbreviated shutout and the Boston Red Sox got home runs from David Ortiz and Jose Iglesias in a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees that was stopped after 5? innings because of rain Sunday night.

Buchholz (8-0) outpitched Hiroki Kuroda and was pulled after the second of three weather delays. Red Sox reliever Andrew Miller was announced into the game and was warming up on the mound when play was abruptly halted for good, but Buchholz would be credited with a complete game because Miller never faced a batter, according to official scorer Jordan Sprechman.

"That's awesome," Buchholz said.

Just before that, the game had resumed for all of 4 minutes before heavy rain returned. Hours earlier, the first pitch was pushed back 45 minutes because thunderstorms were expected to move through the area ? though the rain held off until the top of the sixth inning.

"Three rain delays ? a fake one and two real ones," Ortiz said. "What else can you do? You just stick around and see how things end up."

Boston took two of three at Yankee Stadium for the second time this season and left town with a 2?-game lead in the AL East over Baltimore. The Yankees fell into a third-place tie with Tampa Bay, three games back.

New York has lost seven of eight and nine of 12.

Including their season-opening visit, the Red Sox have won their first two series at Yankee Stadium for the second time in 25 years. They also did it in 2011.

"That's how you get yourself closer to the playoffs," Ortiz said. "Winning series, winning series, winning series."

Buchholz looked perfectly strong and healthy after missing a turn Monday because of irritation in his collarbone area. He yielded only groundball singles to Ichiro Suzuki and Austin Romine while lowering his major league-best ERA to 1.62. The right-hander is tied with Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore for the best record in the AL.

"I've felt really good up to this point," Buchholz said. "I'm just trying to ride the wave."

Pitching for the first time in 11 days, his only dicey moment came when he jumped away from the bag to avoid contact on Brett Gardner's leadoff groundout to first base.

Buchholz also beat Kuroda (6-4) at Yankee Stadium on April 3 and has given up one run over 12 innings in two starts against New York this year.

Ortiz led off the sixth with his 10th home run, a high and long drive that landed in the raised bleachers in right field. He took his time trotting around the bases.

"What went further, the ball or your bat flip?" teammate Will Middlebrooks said, needling Ortiz as he walked by.

After a single and a flyout, heavy showers suddenly poured down and fans scurried hastily up the aisles for cover. Plate umpire Vic Carapazza called for the tarp almost immediately, and most Yankees players jogged off the field.

But not Kuroda.

Dejected and probably aware his outing was over, he walked slowly off the mound with his head down. Without even looking up, he underhanded the game ball into the third row of now-empty seats before descending into the dugout.

Boone Logan relieved after a 37-minute delay and got two quick outs.

Four minutes later it started pouring again, even harder this time, and the tarp went back on. After a 45-minute wait ? and some of the loudest thunder and lightning imaginable ? the game was called.

In the dugout, even a few Yankees got jumpy when the thunder boomed and lightning crackled.

"I heard guys buckled a bit during the storm," manager Joe Girardi said. "I wasn't there but the satellite TV in my office went out."

Consecutive singles to start the fourth by Dustin Pedroia and Ortiz put runners at the corners for Mike Napoli, who got his team-leading 45th RBI with a groundout.

Iglesias sent the first pitch of the fifth to left for his second major league home run in 127 at-bats. Ortiz later connected for No. 411 of his career.

The 23-year-old Iglesias is considered a defensive whiz at shortstop ? with a much better glove than bat. But he's been subbing at third base for the injured Middlebrooks and is 14 for 33 (.424) since he was recalled May 24 from Triple-A Pawtucket.

And while Ortiz has been a Yankees nemesis almost since the day he joined the Red Sox in 2003, the surprising Iglesias has quickly become a particular pest to them this season with a .545 average in 22 at-bats.

"I wanted to go up and in to him but I didn't," Kuroda said through a translator. "Both home runs were bad pitches."

NOTES: Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury missed the entire series with tightness in his left groin. After a day off Monday, the team hopes to have him back Tuesday night for the opener of a three-game series against AL West-leading Texas. ... Shane Victorino (strained left hamstring) is not running full speed yet and manager John Farrell said it's "probably a little premature" to say the speedy outfielder will go out on a minor league rehab assignment Monday or Tuesday. ... Pedroia has started all 58 games this season. ... Boston is 21-21 at the new Yankee Stadium. ... New York LHP Andy Pettitte (4-3, 3.83 ERA) is set to come off the disabled list and start Monday night against Cleveland RHP Justin Masterson (8-3, 3.07). Pettitte has been out since May 17 with a strained muscle in his upper back.

Samsung accidentally confirms upcoming Galaxy S4 Zoom

By Tony Jimenez LONDON, June 3 (Reuters) - Jose Mourinho's return to Chelsea throws up a host of thought-provoking sub plots, none more intriguing than the question of whether the new coach feels John Terry and Fernando Torres have a future at the club. Captain Terry was relegated to fourth-choice centre half under interim boss Rafa Benitez last season and, although Torres had his best season in Chelsea blue, the Spain striker has only bagged one goal in the Premier League in 2013. ...

Printing innovations provide 10-fold improvement in organic electronics

June 2, 2013 ? Through innovations to a printing process, researchers have made major improvements to organic electronics -- a technology in demand for lightweight, low-cost solar cells, flexible electronic displays and tiny sensors. The printing method is fast and works with a variety of organic materials to produce semiconductors of strikingly higher quality than what has so far been achieved with similar methods.

Organic electronics have great promise for a variety of applications, but even the highest quality films available today fall short in how well they conduct electrical current. The team from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have developed a printing process they call FLUENCE -- fluid-enhanced crystal engineering -- that for some materials results in thin films capable of conducting electricity 10 times more efficiently than those created using conventional methods.

"Even better, most of the concepts behind FLUENCE can scale up to meet industry requirements," said Ying Diao, a SLAC/Stanford postdoctoral researcher and lead author of the study, which appeared today in Nature Materials.

Stefan Mannsfeld, a SLAC materials physicist and one of the principal investigators of the experiment, said the key was to focus on the physics of the printing process rather than the chemical makeup of the semiconductor. Diao engineered the process to produce strips of big, neatly aligned crystals that electrical charge can flow through easily, while preserving the benefits of the "strained lattice" structure and "solution shearing" printing technique previously developed in the lab of Mannsfeld's co-principal investigator, Professor Zhenan Bao of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, a joint SLAC-Stanford institute.

To make the advance, Diao focused on controlling the flow of the liquid in which the organic material is dissolved. "It's a vital piece of the puzzle," she said. If the ink flow does not distribute evenly, as is often the case during fast printing, the semiconducting crystals will be riddled with defects. "But in this field there's been little research done on controlling fluid flow."

Diao designed a printing blade with tiny pillars embedded in it that mix the ink so it forms a uniform film. She also engineered a way around another problem: the tendency of crystals to randomly form across the substrate. A series of cleverly designed chemical patterns on the substrate suppress the formation of unruly crystals that would otherwise grow out of alignment with the printing direction. The result is a film of large, well-aligned crystals.

X-ray studies of the group's organic semiconductors at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) allowed them to inspect their progress and continue to make improvements, eventually showing neatly arranged crystals at least 10 times longer than crystals created with other solution-based techniques, and of much greater structural perfection.

The group also repeated the experiment using a second organic semiconductor material with a significantly different molecular structure, and again they saw a notable improvement in the quality of the film. They believe this is a sign the techniques will work across a variety of materials.

Principal investigators Bao and Mannsfeld say the next step for the group is pinning down the underlying relationship between the material and the process that enabled such a stellar result. Such a discovery could provide an unprecedented degree of control over the electronic properties of printed films, optimizing them for the devices that will use them.

"That could lead to a revolutionary advance in organic electronics," Bao said. "We've been making excellent progress, but I think we're only just scratching the surface."

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius will be back in the glare of public scrutiny for the first time in months when he appears at a court hearing Tuesday ahead of his murder trial, the next chapter of a sensational case that transformed the double-amputee Olympian from a smiling global inspiration to a sobbing suspect facing a life sentence in prison if convicted.

There have been just two reported sightings of Pistorius since he was granted bail on Feb. 22. Millions were stunned by the defining images of him leaving a police station on Valentine's Day ? his head hooded and bowed, hands thrust deep into his jacket pockets and guarded by officers ? after he had been arrested and charged for shooting dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Forced out of his self-imposed isolation, Pistorius will emerge briefly for an appearance Tuesday at the same Pretoria Magistrate's Court where he was granted bail, the first step toward the trial that will eventually decide if the 26-year-old Pistorius spends a minimum of 25 years in jail.

Pistorius will defend himself against a charge of premeditated murder by arguing he believed he was acting lawfully and in self-defense when he fired four shots through a bathroom door in his home with his licensed 9mm handgun, criminal and firearm law experts say. The Olympic athlete insists that he made a deadly error when he fired into the closed toilet stall, thinking an intruder was behind the door when it was really Steenkamp.

Pistorius also will be expected to explain his justification for those tragic actions in minute detail by taking the stand and testifying at his trial, which has no start date yet. A judge will pronounce him guilty or innocent. South Africa does not have trial by jury.

The Olympian is claiming "putative self-defense," lawyers who are knowledgeable about the case but are not representing Pistorius said. The lawyers, drawing from the unusually detailed affidavit Pistorius' presented in his bail hearing, said Pistorius will maintain that in a darkened room in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14, and in a calculation that was gravely mistaken, he decided to fire the shots that killed the 29-year-old model and law graduate because he was certain she was an intruder and both their lives were in danger.

It's a difficult defense for any accused, legal experts say.

"The fact that he has admitted that he has killed her by pulling the trigger means the state has a prima facie case and it is expected of the accused to come and convince the court otherwise," Marius du Toit, a former prosecutor, magistrate and now defense attorney with over 20 years' experience in South Africa's justice system said. "His version is going to be exposed and scrutinized in the finest, finest detail."

While the news-dominating nature of Pistorius' case echoes that of former NFL superstar O.J. Simpson, experts point out the crucially different legal implication. Simpson denied any involvement in the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, for which he was acquitted, leaving the prosecution to prove its case.

Even with the principle of innocent until proven guilty, for any defendant in Pistorius' circumstances, "it's on you to come and show to the court that what (you) did was not so unreasonable," Du Toit said.

If the Paralympic champion is to be acquitted of murder ? and also culpable homicide or negligent killing, which carries a mandatory five-year prison sentence in South Africa when a firearm is used ? a judge must find Pistorius had no intention to kill Steenkamp and believed he was following the law to protect himself and others. The judge also must find that any other reasonable person in his situation would have done the same.

Putative self-defense is "extremely difficult" to show, said leading firearm lawyer Martin Hood, predicting an "uphill battle" for Pistorius at trial.

"I do not see how Oscar Pistorius could have concluded that a closed door constitutes danger to such an extent that his life is in danger, bearing in mind that he had gone into that situation," Hood said. "So, it begs the question why did he go looking for trouble?"

Why didn't he check where Steenkamp was, or just leave the room and the perceived danger? Simply, "what he should have done is ... got out the bedroom," Hood said.

There are clues to Pistorius' planned defense in his affidavit. References to his fear of South Africa's high rate of violent crime. "A sense of terror" rushing over him, he testified to in the document, when he realized someone was in the bathroom. Pistorius says he shouted for any intruders to get out of his house and for Steenkamp to call the police before he shot. Actions, his defense may argue, of a reasonable man who believed he was following the law.

"(We) Believe that Oscar's account of what happened on that terrible night in February will be borne out by the evidence that the defense team will lead in court," his family said Sunday.

But records from cellphones found in the bloodied bathroom will be scoured and neighbors will be questioned over a loud argument between Pistorius and Steenkamp that the prosecution says took place that night for indications of a possible motive.

The case also will be closely scrutinized by legal commentators, who say almost unanimously that South Africa's often criticized criminal process will be on trial alongside the country's one-time sporting hero.

Already stung by former lead detective Hilton Botha's bungled testimony in Pistorius' bail hearing, and Botha's admission to amateurish errors in the initial stages of the investigation, South African police declined to comment on details of the investigation. Brig. Phuti Setati, a senior police spokesman, only said the evidence-gathering was ongoing and the investigation was "progressing very very well."

Pistorius' character and his actions around guns could become circumstantial evidence, Hood said, with unconfirmed reports of moments of aggression and a careless attitude with firearms.

Yet, the prosecution's decision to press a premeditated murder charge, because they say Pistorius took the time to put on his prosthetic legs before the shooting, is flawed, Du Toit said.

"I honestly felt there wasn't any justification for (a) premeditated murder (charge)," Du Toit said, "unless something came out in their forensics that we don't know of. And we won't know until trial."

Pistorius says that he did not have his prosthetic legs on and was walking only on his stumps and felt "vulnerable," the most stark and possibly pivotal difference in the prosecution and defense versions and where forensics relating to the height or angle of the bullet holes in perhaps the most crucial piece of evidence ? the toilet door ? could be definitive.

It all could paint a picture of Oscar Pistorius as a cold-blooded killer, furious and intent on murder following an argument, as the prosecution alleges, who took the time to put on his prosthetic legs before striding to the bathroom and killing his cowering girlfriend.

Or as a terrified disabled man, standing on the stumps of his amputated legs and shooting to protect himself and the woman he loved from what he thought was a dangerous criminal.

The trial is likely to swing between these vastly different preconceptions of Pistorius.

Like a smoke with your coffee? Not near a Starbucks anymore

NEW YORK (AP) ? Starbucks customers will soon have to stamp out their cigarettes before approaching the cafes.

The Seattle-based chain says it will start banning smoking within 25 feet of its stores, beginning Saturday, where permitted by its leases.

Starbucks spokeswoman Jaime Lynn Riley says the intent is to expand the indoor no-smoking policy to the outdoor seating areas.

"If there were any concerns, we would hope to resolve it amicably." Riley said, referring to a customer who might be smoking within the restricted area.

The rule will apply to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by Starbucks Corp., regardless of whether they have outdoor seating areas.

The policy shouldn't cause a big difference in many areas that already ban smoking within a certain distance of a business entrance.

(AP) ? A fresh analysis by NASA's Curiosity rover confirms a stream once ran through Gale Crater on Mars.

During a pit stop last year, Curiosity came upon hundreds of smooth, round pebbles that look strikingly similar to deposits in river banks on Earth.

Scientists believe the rover rolled onto an ancient streambed, but needed to study the stones in more detail. So Curiosity snapped high-resolution pictures and fired its laser at several pebbles to analyze the chemical makeup.

Researchers say the roundness of the stones was shaped by a fast-flowing stream that probably was ankle to waist-deep. Curiosity landed in the crater near the equator last summer.

The analysis appears in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

Care to Share My Hotspot?

At last count, I pay for three different Internet plans. There?s my home line?a 20 Mbps (i.e., pretty fast) broadband plan I get from AT&T for about $60 per month. I?ve also got a coveted $30-per-month unlimited data plan for my iPhone. (AT&T discontinued that offer several years ago, but it let current customers keep the plan, so I?ve been hanging on to it dearly). Finally, I?ve got broadband access on my iPad, too. That?s through Verizon, and it doesn?t require a contract?I pay $20 for 1GB of data, and I get ?tethering,? too, which means that I can share my iPad?s connection with other devices (like my laptop).

?

If keeping all these plans seems bizarre to you, it does to me, too. Why would anyone need a data plan on his phone and tablet? Why can?t the two devices share the same plan, or why can?t my phone share its access with all my other devices? My reason is peculiar?AT&T won?t let me add tethering to my iPhone?s unlimited plan; it wants me to ?upgrade? my $30 unlimited plan to a $50 5GB plan in order to get tethering. That would mean more money for less data, which is why I pay for separate access on my iPad.

?

Still, odd as my data needs may seem, I suspect a lot of people are in a similar boat. People who don?t travel much or regularly work outside of their home or office may need wireless access on a tablet or laptop only rarely. It?s only about once a month or so that I?ll find myself in a place without Wi-Fi and need some way to connect my computer. Over the years I?ve looked into a lot of ways to fulfill this need?to give me Internet on the go sometimes, without a contract, and for not much money. And I?ve always come up empty. Mobile data plans without a contract are pretty expensive, and they?ve all got various unfriendly restrictions?like the fact that you pay for data that ?expires? at the end of the month even if you don?t use it.

?

Recently, I discovered a much better way to get occasional Internet access for my laptop and tablet while I?m on the go. It?s a mobile hotspot service created by a startup called Karma, and while it?s not perfect, it?s one of the friendliest, cheapest ways I?ve found for mobile Internet users to get online.

?

Karma is two things: First, it?s a hotspot, a tiny device that connects to 4G networks and then shares the Internet connection to any device that can use Wi-Fi?your laptop, tablet, e-reader, etc. The device, which is about the size of a large wristwatch, sells for $79. To use it, you?ll also need to purchase broadband access?and that?s where Karma really shines. There?s no contract; instead, you can buy as much or as little data as you need. Karma charges $14 for 1GB of broadband, which is enough for a few days of heavy Web surfing (or several hours if you?re watching videos or streaming music). Karma?s plan has two major advantages over pay-as-you-go data services offered by large carriers. First, Karma?s coverage doesn?t expire every month. For instance, my Verizon iPad?s 1GB plan resets every month?if I only use half of my gig, I lose the rest on the first of the month. Karma?s plan never resets. You can pay $14 and use your gigabyte over as long a time as you like?you can use 500 MB in June, nothing in July and August, and then 500 MB in September, and you?ll still have spent only $14 for access.

?

?We wanted to make it very simple,? Robert Gaal, Karma?s CEO, told me. ?We hated the concept of paying for something and having it expire?of paying for something that you?re not using.?

?

Karma?s other advantage is the way it encourages sharing your hotspot. Every Karma hotspot is ?open??that is, if you turn it on in an airport or coffee shop, other people can connect to it and begin surfing the Web. But get this: When they connect, they don?t use ?your? data. Instead, when a new Karma user joins your hotspot for the first time, you and that user each get 100MB of free data access. The more people that you bring to Karma, the more free data you get.

?

What?s more, when you buy data from Karma, it?s tied not to your hotspot but rather to your Karma account. This means that you can use your data anywhere you find a Karma device?if you?re in a coffee shop where someone else has a Karma hotspot, you can hop on and use some of the 1GB of data you?ve purchased previously. Indeed, you don?t even need to buy a hotspot to use Karma. If your buddy has a Karma and you always travel together, you can buy data access to use on his (or anyone else?s) hotspot.

?

Karma is thus much cheaper than hotspots offered by large carriers. Verizon?s hotspot, for instance, sells for $99, and then costs $60 per month for 3GB of data. AT&T charges $30 per month for 3GB of data. T-Mobile charges $25 for 1.5GB of data per month. (These prices are all prepaid, i.e., they don?t require a contract, which is what you?d need for occasional use like mine. You may be able to get lower prices if you sign a contract, but you shouldn?t do that if you?ll need your service only every once in a while.) And because Karma?s data never expires, it?s cheaper than prepaid services offered by many smaller carriers, too.

?

I used Karma in two places?around my home in Northern California and on a short trip I took to Southern California last month. Both are big, populated places, and I got decent speeds there, usually between 3 and 6 Mbps. (I also found the hotspot?s battery life to be pretty good; it?s rated to last six to eight hours, which was good enough for me.) But one big downside to Karma is that it doesn?t work everywhere. The service uses the broadband infrastructure built by Clearwire, whose service is available across the country but mainly around large cities. If you plan on traveling to many less densely populated areas, Karma might not be right for you.

?

Karma is also not the absolute cheapest way to get occasional broadband on the go. That distinction, as far as I can tell, goes to FreedomPop, a startup that offers you a 4G hotspot for $40 and then gives you 500MB of data access for free every month. Yes, it?s totally free. The only trouble is, if you need more than 500MB of data, FreedomPop?s cheapest plan is $17.99 for 2GB?which, per GB, is technically cheaper than Karma, except that FreedomPop?s data also expires every month. So if you?re planning to use more than 500 MB but less than 2GB each month, Karma may be the better option for you. (I have not tested FreedomPop?s service, but it has gotten good reviews.)

?

Whichever of these you choose, you?ll be better off than going with one of the big guys. With Karma or FreedomPop, you?ll have Internet access in most places, for a small upfront cost and a reasonable rate for data. If you?re a sometimes mobile Web surfer, you ought to give one of them a shot. ?

Radiation measured by NASA's Curiosity on voyage to Mars has implications for future human missions

May 30, 2013 ? Measurements taken by NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission as it delivered the Curiosity rover to Mars in 2012 are providing NASA the information it needs to design systems to protect human explorers from radiation exposure on deep-space expeditions in the future.

Curiosity's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) is the first instrument to measure the radiation environment during a Mars cruise mission from inside a spacecraft that is similar to potential human exploration spacecraft. The findings reduce uncertainty about the effectiveness of radiation shielding and provide vital information to space mission designers who will need to build in protection for spacecraft occupants in the future.

"As this nation strives to reach an asteroid and Mars in our lifetimes, we're working to solve every puzzle nature poses to keep astronauts safe so they can explore the unknown and return home," said William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for human exploration and operations in Washington. "We learn more about the human body's ability to adapt to space every day aboard the International Space Station. As we build the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket to carry and shelter us in deep space, we'll continue to make the advances we need in life sciences to reduce risks for our explorers. Curiosity's RAD instrument is giving us critical data we need so that we humans, like the rover, can dare mighty things to reach the Red Planet."

The findings, which are published in the May 31 edition of the journal Science, indicate radiation exposure for human explorers could exceed NASA's career limit for astronauts if current propulsion systems are used.

Two forms of radiation pose potential health risks to astronauts in deep space. One is galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), particles caused by supernova explosions and other high-energy events outside the solar system. The other is solar energetic particles (SEPs) associated with solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun.

Radiation exposure is measured in units of Sievert (Sv) or milliSievert (one one-thousandth Sv). Long-term population studies have shown exposure to radiation increases a person's lifetime cancer risk. Exposure to a dose of 1 Sv, accumulated over time, is associated with a five percent increase in risk for developing fatal cancer.

NASA has established a three percent increased risk of fatal cancer as an acceptable career limit for its astronauts currently operating in low-Earth orbit. The RAD data showed the Curiosity rover was exposed to an average of 1.8 milliSieverts of GCR per day on its journey to Mars. Only about three percent of the radiation dose was associated with solar particles because of a relatively quiet solar cycle and the shielding provided by the spacecraft.

The RAD data will help inform current discussions in the United States' medical community, which is working to establish exposure limits for deep-space explorers in the future.

"In terms of accumulated dose, it's like getting a whole-body CT scan once every five or six days," said Cary Zeitlin, a principal scientist at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio and lead author of the paper on the findings. "Understanding the radiation environment inside a spacecraft carrying humans to Mars or other deep space destinations is critical for planning future crewed missions."

Current spacecraft shield much more effectively against SEPs than GCRs. To protect against the comparatively low energy of typical SEPs, astronauts might need to move into havens with extra shielding on a spacecraft or on the Martian surface, or employ other countermeasures. GCRs tend to be highly energetic, highly penetrating particles that are not stopped by the modest shielding provided by a typical spacecraft.

"Scientists need to validate theories and models with actual measurements, which RAD is now providing," said Donald M. Hassler, a program director at SwRI and principal investigator of the RAD investigation. "These measurements will be used to better understand how radiation travels through deep space and how it is affected and changed by the spacecraft structure itself. The spacecraft protects somewhat against lower energy particles, but others can propagate through the structure unchanged or break down into secondary particles."

After Curiosity landed on Mars in August, the RAD instrument continued operating, measuring the radiation environment on the planet's surface. RAD data collected during Curiosity's science mission will continue to inform plans to protect astronauts as NASA designs future missions to Mars in the coming decades.

SwRI, together with Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, built RAD with funding from NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate and Germany's national aerospace research center, Deutsches Zentrum f?r Luft- und Raumfahrt.

Don't Be Scared, It's Just Mole

Mole is to the Mexicans what ragu is to the Italians. It's a beloved sauce that's the crowning jewel of their cuisine -- and one that's truly a labor of love. Not only does this dish ask for an encyclopedia of ingredients of chiles, spices and chocolate, but its in-depth steps could intimidate the most seasoned of cooks. And we haven't even talked about the stirring. There's a lot of stirring required to make a proper mole.

What we like most about mole, besides its incredibly rich and complex flavor, is that it's best made by home cooks who don't mind spending the day pouring love into just one dish. It's a dish of tradition, with a recipe that's passed on through family members. It's a recipe called upon for celebration and special occasions. And it's deeply rooted in Mexico's history. Mole has been cooked and preserved for centuries, making it beyond perfected. Which is exactly why you should take the time to master it.

We know what you're thinking. With everything we've just said about the intensity required to make mole, why in the world would you ever give it a try? Well, for one, because it's mole -- and having an amazing mole recipe up your sleeve will serve you well in life. Trust us.

And two, because if little old Mexican grandmothers are happily spending their time and energy making this dish, we're certain you can do the same. Just remember, at the end of it all, you will be rewarded with a huge supply of mole, and that's enough to make even the most arduous tasks more than worth it. Now go forth, and make mole. We're fans of this Mole Poblano recipe but there are many variations on this classic to explore.
