Foxconn Slows China Hiring But Says Not Due to Slow Phone Sales

'Due to an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year holiday compared to years past, our company has decided to temporarily slow down our recruitment process,' Foxconn Technology Group said.

SHANGHAI --Technology giant Foxconn has slowed new hiring at its vast China factories, it said Thursday, but denied the move was linked to weak demand for Apple's iPhone 5, which it produces.

"Due to an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year holiday compared to years past, our company has decided to temporarily slow down our recruitment process," Foxconn Technology Group said.

China's migrant workers go home for the annual Lunar New Year holiday and immediately after the long break companies typically report labor shortages as employees delay their return or fail to go back to their previous jobs.

The Financial Times?newspaper reported Wednesday that Foxconn had frozen China hiring due to reduced orders for Apple's iPhone 5.

But Foxconn denied hiring decisions were made based on any one customer, while not specifically naming Apple.

"This action is not related to any single customer and any speculation to the contrary is false and inaccurate," it said.

Foxconn is the world's largest contract electronics maker and assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia, among others, in giant plants in China.

The Wall Street Journal on Thursday quoted a Foxconn spokesman as saying that more than 90% of its workers had returned to their jobs after the Lunar New Year and denying the move was related to customer orders.

Foxconn admitted in November last year that it was struggling to meet strong demand for the then newly launched iPhone 5 due to difficulties in assembling the product because of certain design features, which it did not specify.

The company employs more than one million workers in China, roughly half of them based in its main facility in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.

Foxconn has come under the spotlight in recent years over worker suicides, labor unrest and the use of underage interns at its Chinese plants. It has taken steps to address concerns raised by an independent audit of conditions mandated by Apple.

RyGos' Trainer Dishes Diet And Fitness Secrets - Celebuzz

The woman who helped create Ryan Gosling?s insanely killer bod speaks candidly to Celebuzz?about a career training A-List talent; how she pushed the Gangster Squad star to peak physical condition ? and how she once confiscated Christina Aguilera?s?mini bar.

Celebuzz: Training the gorgeous Ryan Gosling must be the best job in the industry. Was it as good as it sounds?
Ashley Borden: Ryan?s very consistent, he works hard. Yes, he?s got a very good body.

CB: What kind of food does Ryan eat?
AB: When I was training Ryan he was on a very high calorie diet. He was in the middle of bulking up for a movie role, you see. Ryan was eating, eating, eating, but he was eating whole foods. Good food from the ground, like real food! Oatmeal, protein, vegetables, fruit, as opposed to crap. Hamburgers every once in a while are fine. But Ryan was a clean eater!

CB: What film role he was bulking up for?
AB: Ryan was bulking up for a film is he was attached to about a wrestler. It was interesting to train him for that role because it wasn?t a role where he had to just look good with his shirt off, he had to look and perform like a sportsman. And his body had to withstand injury.

CB: Tell us about Ryan Gosling?s work-out regime?
AB: We were building Ryan?s movement patterns. So we go over your forward reverse lunges, I watch you do push-ups and pull-ups. What that means is I?m looking to see if you?re in your gluts, or anywhere, then we start a personalized training plan. I?d say Ryan is probably the most consistent with his training.

CB: Where does Ryan work out?
AB: We always worked out in a gym, when Ryan is in town he always goes to the same place. He has a number of trainers, he works with Aaron who is a super cool guy who does his strength training.

CB: How did you get Ryan in fighting shape?
AB: We would start with a full-body warm up and then we do what?s called ?rolling out?, you roll out your whole body before you train with a foam roller. We?d do a lot of dumbbell work, lots of lifting, and then some reverse lunges. Ryan uses a lot of resistance bands, so he?s pulling on those, building up strength. The key to Ryan?s physique is core strength, so we?d do a lot of work on that?including wearing a weighted vest. He?d wear a 10lb-weighted vest while working out. He was being trained to be an athlete.

CB: How long did you work with him?
AB: It was for about six months, unfortunately the movie wasn?t made in the end.

CB: Does he get why people think he?s hot or does it baffle him??
AB: Ryan?s an incredibly down to earth guy, he doesn?t act like a star?I mean, I?m working with him, so he acts like all of my clients, we get down to business, we sweat, I?d never ask about personal stuff.

CB: Tell us about the sweating!
AB: Yes, Ryan Gosling sweats when he works out! I hate to break it to you, but he?s a normal human being and he does sweat when he works out. He works hard in the gym, yes, he sweats his ass off!

CB: Does he get lots of admiring glances from onlookers when they?re working out?
AB: He likes to work out at the same place, it?s an LA gym where lots of celebrities and ?industry people? go, so he never gets mobbed. LA is too cool for that, it?s cooler to ignore a celebrity than ask for an autograph. It?s never happened.

CB: Was Christina Aguilera a diva to work with? We can?t imagine her sweating away in the gym?
AB: Christina is the hugest celebrity I ever worked with. I trained her from when she was 19 to 23. During the Stripped tour? At that time, we were just getting her in shape and putting on some muscle. Explaining nutrition to her in a way that she could absorb it was important, because at the time she?ate like a 13 year who?s parents were out of town!

CB: Where did you start with Christina?
AB: I just introduced her into eating healthier, but she was not interested! But she worked hard when she was on tour, and we were getting her ready for music videos and for tours. It was my job to manage her food?and drink. I ordered all the mini bars in the hotels to be cleared before she got to the hotel room. When she ordered room service?the kitchen was told me to check with me before delivering it.

CB: Is that normal, to get your clients off the booze when you?re training them?
AB: I take all the booze away from clients if I?m on the road with them. On tour, no client can order food without my knowing about it. I basically treat people the way I want to be treated and train the way I?d want to be trained.

CB: How did you get into the training business?
AB: Well, I grew up in a highly active, fitness health family. My mom owned health food stores, my dad owned sporting good stores, my mom was a marathon runner, and my dad was into athletics. I was into Jazz dancing growing up, but I always thought I was a terrible athlete. I moved to LA when I was a dancer at 18 or 19 and I was always into fitness, but I had a terrible eating disorder for many years, starting when I was about 8 years old and hit rock bottom in ?90.

CB: How did you recover your disorder?
AB: I went into treatment right before I graduated from high school. I decided I wasn?t going to die from my health, I was gonna die from my head. So that?s what I wanted to fix. When I got out of treatment I was acting. I had done commercial work and I had done stand up comedy too, but there was something missing, something to fill my soul and when I got out of treatment I realized training was what I want to do.

CB: You always read about female celebrities who claim they don?t work out, they just ?walk their dog? or ?do a little yoga?. Is that true?
AB: Some people don?t train; there are some really lucky genetic celebrities?but no one I?ve worked with. To look like a celebrity you have to work hard. Halle Barry works the hardest. She was at Gold?s gym when I was at Gold?s gym. But Halle trains and I do know her and she looks amazing. And some celebrities do give props to the people they train with. I admit, I have worked with some people and they just say ?something?s just shifted in my life,? and I?m like, ?I practically lived at your house for six months!? That?s what shifted!

CB: Did you always want to train celebrities?
AB: No! And most of my clients are regular people! I get 100?s of emails a year from trainers all over the world asking me how to train celebrities and I usually say, ?you should find another profession, because you go into training because you want to help people.? It?s true though, my celebrity business helps the rest of my business?but remember celebrities, they?re not any different than us.

CB: What makes you different to other trainers?
AB: I specialize in Myofascial release, which is sexier than it sounds. I use a foam roller to give a deep tissue massage. You roll out your whole body before you train. The rolling out opens up your muscles and provides you with more blood flow in general? So like your quads, you can do your IT bands? This is the prep for everybody. The rolling out is really good for reducing cellulite. Because some women don?t care about mobility, they just want to get rid of their cellulite.

CB: Do your friends think you have the best job in the world?
AB: Sometimes. But I?m not bowled over by celebrities; I was only bowled over by Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer! He worked with my dogs? It was like I met Jesus!

EU Presses Google On Privacy

Google's decision last year to revise its privacy policy still isn't sitting well with EU regulators.

This week, the French agency CNIL criticized Google for failing to adequately respond to criticism of its new policy. The regulators said they intend to move forward with their complaints.

The EU's complaints about Google's privacy policy date to March, when the company? began combining information about signed-in users across a variety of platforms and services -- including Gmail, Android, and YouTube. People can't opt out of the data combination. Instead, if they don't want Google to use data to create detailed profiles of them, they must access sites without signing in, or use different browsers for different purposes.

Google says that it wants to use the data in order to target people more precisely. The company also points out that the new policy doesn't allow it to collect any new data, only to draw on it in new ways.

But regulators in Europe -- which has broader privacy laws than the U.S. -- have concerns about Google's practices. In October, they demanded that Google clarify how it combines data. The regulators also told Google to "develop new tools to give users more control over their personal data."

If nothing else, the dispute highlights the contrast between privacy laws in Europe and the U.S., where Google's new policy didn't face challenge from the Federal Trade Commission.

While some Web users filed a potential class-action lawsuit against Google for changing its policy, the case doesn't appear to be going anywhere. In December, U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal in San Jose, Calif. dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice. He wrote in his ruling that the users "raised serious questions regarding Google?s respect for consumers? privacy," but said they couldn't proceed unless they could allege some sort of injury. The users have until the end of this month to beef up their allegations and try again, but it seems unlikely that they'll be able to allege the type of economic harm that would get them their day in court.

Obama's backup plan: Maximum 13-year wait for citizenship

President Barack Obama talks about immigration reform at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas on Jan 29. (John Gurzinski/Getty??

Illegal immigrants would face a maximum of a 13-year wait to become citizens if the Obama administration's version of immigration reform passed, according to a leaked draft of the bill obtained by the Miami Herald.

The unfinished bill, first published by USA Today over the weekend, was drafted as a backup plan in case Congress fails to vote on legislation, according to White House chief of staff Denis McDonough on Sunday. Under the plan, undocumented immigrants would have to pay a fine, enroll in a Department of Education-approved English and U.S. civics course (or prove their English skills are already up to par) and pass a background check to gain temporary legal immigration status.

Once approved, immigrants would have to wait either eight years or until current legal immigration backlogs are cleared (whichever comes first) before gaining permanent legal status, commonly referred to as a green card. Once immigrants gain green cards, they must wait five years before applying for citizenship.

Under the 1986 immigration reform law that eventually legalized 2.7 million immigrants, the waiting period before being allowed to apply for a green card was just 18 months.

Sen. Marco Rubio, one of four Republicans in the Senate's bipartisan working group on immigration, said in a statement that Obama's bill is ?dead on arrival? in part because it does not contain the same border security provisions the working group wants. Under the senators' still-evolving plan, undocumented immigrants could not get permanent legal status before the border is declared secure by a panel of experts and politicians. Immigrant rights groups have argued this border security trigger could mean decades-long waits for citizenship for the country's illegal immigrants.

Groups that oppose immigration reform say the senators' plan does not differ all that much from the president's, because both agree that most of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants should have an eventual path to citizenship.

From the Forums: More thoughts on the Windows 8 Start menu debate

It's a topic that just won't go away for long time Windows users. We are speaking of the lack of a Start menu in the desktop UI for Windows 8. In a recent editorial, we pointed out that a lot of the users of Microsoft's latest OS had downloaded several different Start menu programs made by third parties and that was evidence that many users want to keep the familiar desktop menu around.

The editorial generated a ton of news comments on its own, with Neowin readers debating the pros and cons of doing away with the Start menu. The debate spilled over in our forums, where Neowin member warwagon launched a member poll which asked, "Do you want the start menu in Windows 8?" As of this writing, the "Yes" votes are slightly ahead with 52.85 percent, compared to "No" with 47.15 percent.

The member poll generated quite a few comments on its own, both for and against adding the Start menu back in Windows 8. Decidedly in the "Yes" section is tsupersonic who stated:

Hell yes. For people without touchscreen monitors (which is the majority of monitors), you need the damn start button in Windows. Hell, I still would want the start button on a monitor without a touchscreen. I can't tolerate Windows 8 without a start button.

Neowin member McKay is in the "No" section of the debate, and even shows off his Windows 8 Start screen to prove his point. He says:

No, I've gotten used to having my apps organised into groups that I want instead of one giant list that can only utilize the height of my screen. I see this as added functionality and I wouldn't want to lose it.

While this debate will likely continue, it seems like Microsoft has no interest in returning the Start menu to the desktop portion of Windows 8. That means that third party companies that offer Start menu alternatives will most likely continue to enjoy a large audience for months, if not years, to come.
