AT&T: Buy Two Windows Phone 8 Smartphones, Get $100 Off One

If you're a fan of AT&T and an aspiring fan of the Windows Phone platform, now might be an ideal time for you to take the plunge.

According to a memo leaked over to WPCentral, the wireless carrier is running a new promotion that takes $100 off the cost of any Windows Phone 8 devices, but with one important caveat: You have to buy two smartphones in order to get the discount.

So, for example, presuming that you (and your family, or you and a loved one, etc.) are game for two Nokia Lumia 920 smartphones ? and a two year-contract ? then the $100 discount will automatically appear in your online shopping cart during your purchasing. If you're buying two different Windows Phone 8 devices, then whichever smartphone happens to be priced lower will receive the $100 discount.

The deal applies to both new activations and upgrades, and customers will still be able to take advantage of AT&T's 14-day return policy for smartphones ordered through the promotion.

However, it doesn't appear as if AT&T's $100-off promotion is stacking with another special giveaway that the carrier is running, exclusive to those purchasing Lumia 920 smartphones. For those who just purchase a single Lumia 920 (with the requisite two-year contract), AT&T will wave the cost of the device's Wireless Charging Plate ? a $49 savings that isn't quite as nice a discount as what amounts to a second free Lumia 920, but isn't something to scoff at if you have no need for a second smartphone.

Unfortunately (for shrewd shoppers), AT&T won't let you have any free Wireless Charging Plates if you opt for its $100-discount deal. Both promotions are scheduled to run now through February 21 ? plenty of time to find someone else to pawn an extra Windows Phone 8 smartphone off on.

Greetings! I'm Scarlette...and I'm pretty sure I had an account with this community a while back, but its been so inactive that I don't remember any of the log in info..So hence, we start anew!

I've been role playing a good number of years, but I really didn't involved with any communities till about 00...We can thank SDCC for that one! I went my first year and the whole world of nerd/geek opened up to me. "Oh look! There's MORE like ME?!" I celebrated 12 years of SDCC, this year, and will continue to go every year until I have to die in a gauntlet to acquire tickets.

I prefer text role playing, I feel its more organic and I like the group collaboration. My arsenal of characters mainly consists of females, but I can pretty much play anything with relative ease...I really enjoy creating characters from the ground up! I have conducted RP's and managed guilds. I have done table-top role play, dabbled in D&D but it isn't necessarily my strong suit, though I did thoroughly enjoy Vampire: Masquerade.. Which leads to my next bit of information: Genre!

I've played just about every genre, but my major interference is fantasy (I think majority of the site will agree with this) and I like all the niche genres that entail with Fantasy. Paranormal and Steampunk are super high on that list!

Aside from role playing, I enjoy multiple things, but I think its safe to say if it is classified as nerdy and/or geeky...I'm most likely into it. (And as a side note: Sweetheart, I was a nerd before it was cool!) Video games also take up a large portion of my time...most likely why Im so sleep deprived. And movies, I enjoy movies. Instant Netflix is, like, my best friend EVER...Next to the Kindle, I think I love my Kindle more then I love Netflix. I also like ice cream, cellos, and comics. I dislike pancakes- thought I would throw that in there to mix things up, haha.

Russian soldiers to trade foot wraps for socks

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian official says it's time for the nation's soldiers to switch from foot wraps to socks.

Since the late 17th century, Russian soldiers have been using wraps, rectangular strips of cloth that are carefully wrapped around their bare feet to prevent blisters from tall heavy boots with no laces.

But Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who took the post two months ago, said he was surprised to learn that some soldiers are still using the wraps, called "portyanki" in Russian, and told them to use socks instead.

At a televised meeting with military officers Monday, he said, "In 2013, or at least by the end of 2013, we must forget the word portyanki."

Czar Peter the Great adopted the custom from the Dutch army in the late 17th century.

Windows RT Jailbreak tool released, opening up the door for a Microsoft Surface homebrew community

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Windows RT operating system had been jailbroken to allow for the execution of unsigned ARM desktop applications. Microsoft quickly issued a statement saying it does not consider the findings to be part of a security vulnerability, and applauded the hacker for his ingenuity. Now, an enthusiast over at XDA Developers by the name of netham45 has released a Windows RT Jailbreak tool.

The tool is simply a batch file that automates the jailbreak process discovered by the hacker clrokr, who was able to change a setting in the Windows RT kernel after tracking down the right value to open up the types of apps that the OS can run. As we outlined before, the exploit is limited by the fact that the setting needs to be changed each time the PC boots up (it can?t be permanently altered on devices enabled with Secure Boot), and it only works for unsigned ARM desktop apps.

At the time of the discovery, we noted that the hack opens up possibilities for a homebrew scene full of ARM desktop apps for Windows RT and thus the Microsoft Surface. Previously, only very technically-savvy users would be able to reproduce clrokr?s method; now a tool exists that does most of the work.

This still all hinges on the hope that Microsoft doesn?t issue a patch (and its statement was open-ended enough that this may happen). Earlier this week, Microsoft told TNW: ?We?ll not guarantee these approaches will be there in future releases.?

Yet even if Microsoft addresses the issue, netham45 has a plan:

Q) Can Microsoft patch this?
A) Yes and no. They can patch it through Windows Update, but since we have the ability to reinstall from recovery partitions we can revert any Windows Updates they release.

We have contacted Microsoft to figure out if the company has changed its stance and whether it will be taking action or letting this fly by. While it looks like a Microsoft Surface homebrew community is already starting to form, whether or not the company does something about it could affect its growth.

After all, the tool in question will only get better, and the number of homebrew apps will accrete accordingly. In fact, there?s already a list.
