Berries, Tea May Cut Men's Odds for Parkinson's: Study | Tempo ...

Regularly consumption of food and drink rich in substances called flavonoids, such as berries, apples, tea and red wine, can lower a man?s risk of developing Parkinson?s disease by 40 percent, new research suggests.

For women, however, a reduction in risk was only seen when they ate at least several servings of berries a week, according to the study. Men also had a risk reduction from frequently eating berries.

?For total flavonoids, the beneficial result was only in men. But, berries are protective in both men and women,? said the study?s lead author, Dr. Xiang Gao, a research scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health and an associate epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston.

?Berries could be a neuroprotective agent. People can include berries in their regular diet. There are no harmful effects from berry consumption, and they lower the risk of hypertension too,? Gao added.

Results of the study are published online April 4 in the journal Neurology.

Parkinson?s disease is a degenerative condition that affects the central nervous system. It causes movement disorders, such as tremors, rigidity and balance problems. About 500,000 Americans have Parkinson?s disease, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Flavonoids are substances found in plant foods that help prevent damage to the body?s cells, known as oxidative damage. Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid plentiful in such berries as strawberries and blueberries.

For the study, the researchers reviewed nutrition and health data from almost 50,000 men enrolled in the Health Professional Follow-Up Study and more than 80,000 women participating in the Nurses? Health Study.

The researchers looked at dietary intake of five major flavonoid sources: tea, berries, apples, orange juice and red wine.

Over 20 to 22 years of follow-up, 805 people developed Parkinson?s disease ? 438 men and 367 women.

When researchers compared those who ate the most flavonoids with those who ate the least, they found that only men saw a statistically significant benefit, lowering their risk of Parkinson?s by 40 percent.

Gao said it wasn?t clear why only men benefited from the extra flavonoid intake, but he noted that other studies have also found differences between men and women. Gao said it?s not clear if there?s a biological mechanism causing these differences, or another factor.

But, when the researchers looked at the dietary compounds individually, it was clear that berries could benefit both men and women, lowering the risk of Parkinson?s disease by about 25 percent for those who had at least two servings of berries a week.

Gao said that anthocyanins protect the cells from oxidative damage and they also have an anti-inflammatory effect, which may be how berries help to reduce Parkinson?s risk.

The study findings should be interpreted cautiously because the participants were mostly white professionals, and the results might not apply to other ethnic groups. Also, recollections of dietary intake may be faulty, and it?s possible that other properties of fruits and vegetables might have influenced the results, the authors said.

Dr. Michael Okun, medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation, said, ?It is exciting to see research emerging about modifiable dietary issues that may affect the risk of getting diseases such as Parkinson?s.?

But, he added, it?s important for people to realize that this research isn?t applicable to people who already have the disease.

He also said it will be important to confirm these findings in other studies and learn the mechanism of how berries and other flavonoids appear to offer some protection against Parkinson?s disease. (Serena Gordon, HealthDay News)

Christian, Jewish holidays intersect Friday

Religious observances intersect this year for two major faiths. As Christians around the world continue their Holy Week with Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Jews will begin Passover on Friday at sunset. The confluence comes as the Jewish lunar-based calendar makes the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nisan fall on Good Friday.

On Maundy Thursday, foot-washing was a part of many ceremonies, as Jesus washed the feet of disciples at the Last Supper the night before he was crucified.

In London, Britain?s Queen Elizabeth and Princess Beatrice attended services at York Minster as part of the Queen?s diamond Jubilee tour of the country, the Daily Mail reported.

In Manila, a crucifixion was re-enacted ahead of Good Friday, when many penitents are expected to be nailed to crosses in displays of religious devotion.

Good Friday marks the day Jesus was nailed to the cross. Many churches will hold services, Passion plays and dramatic readings. Many bakeries will feature hot cross buns.

Stock markets will be closed.

In New York, thousands are expected for morning Good Friday processions, including one over the Brooklyn Bridge to Ground Zero in Manhattan.

On Friday evening, Passover starts with a seder, a festive meal in which food and rituals symbolically help in retelling the Jews? exodus from Egypt and freedom from bondage. A key symbol at the seder and throughout the eight-day holiday is matzo, unleavened bread representing the haste in which Jews fled: They couldn?t even wait for bread dough to rise.

?Passover is really a story of salvation, although many now consider it a story of freedom,?? Rabbi Mitch Chefitz, scholar-in-residence at Miami?s Temple Israel, told the Miami Herald.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle plan to join a small seder at the White House, a tradition inspired from a 2008 pause along the primary campaign trail in Pennsylvania. Then-candidate Obama joined Jewish staffers holding a seder, which concludes with the line: ?Next year in Jerusalem.? Obama pledged, ?Next year in the White House.?

On Thursday, Obama issued a Passover message noting ?the story of that first Exodus has also inspired those who are not Jewish? with common hopes and a common sense of obligation to ?repairing the world? and ?making our union more perfect.?

Holy Saturday, the last day of Lent, marks the last day Jesus lay in his tomb.

On Easter Sunday, marking Jesus? resurrection, many Christians gather for Easter sunrise services, have formal suppers and hold Easter egg hunts with dyed eggs. It is the end of Lent, the 40-day period of pentinence and fasting that began with Ash Wednesday.

Easter ?is our commemoration of passing over from the bondage of sin to a new life of freedom,? The Rev. Douglas McCaleb, dean of Miami?s Trinity Cathedral, told the Herald.

The White House on Monday hosts the 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll, with the theme ?Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move.? More than 35,000 people are expected on the South Lawn for games, stories and a traditional egg roll.

Pardoned Convict's Attorneys Want Legal Fees From City Lawyers ...

CHICAGO (CBS) ? The case of an elderly man who claims Chicago Police forced him to confess to a rape more than 60 years ago is not settled yet.

As WBBM Newsradio?s Bob Conway reports, Oscar Walden Jr., 80, spent decades in prison before being pardoned in 2002. He then sued the city for $15 million.

LISTEN: WBBM Newsradio?s Bob Conway reports

Walden claims police tortured him into admitting to the rape of a white woman on Nov. 24, 1951, on the city?s South Side. Walden is African-American.

A jury ruled against Walden in the lawsuit last year, but U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo set aside the decision and ordered a second trial, while criticizing the tactics of the city?s lawyers.

Now, the Chicago Tribune reports, Walden?s attorneys are asking that the city or the law firm that represented it ? Andrew M. Hale & Associates ? be forced to pay legal fees, amounting to more than $330,000.

The court filing by Walden?s attorneys claims that the lawyers who represented the city ? Andrew Hale and Avi Kamionski ? were also criticized by judges in other cases, the Tribune reported. In the Walden case, they supplied the jury with a graphic narrative of the rape and other evidence that was not supposed to be admitted, the newspaper reported.

In his criminal trial, Walden said he had to sleep on the floor in the old ?death row? in the basement of the Cook County Jail, where an electric chair was once located. He also testified that he had a forced circumcision when he arrived at Stateville Prison to serve his sentence after conviction, according to published reports.

Andrew M. Hale & Associates has since been removed from the case, and calls the request for fees unwarranted, the Tribune reported.

Twitter for BlackBerry 3.0 brings easier photo-uploading, automatic link-shortening, BBM integration

Image
Listen up, you BlackBerry users, you: RIM's just released a new version of its BB app, and though the list of new features is hardly earth-shaking, they should all be welcome additions to those of you who've been making do with version 2.0. On board we've got automatic link-shortening, for starters, along with BlackBerry Messenger integration (read: the ability to link your Twitter account with BBM). So far so good, right? You can also upload photos to pic.twitter.com directly from your device's camera, or as you're composing tweets. Finally, Twitter says it's made it easier to share websites from within the browser. So long as you've got BlackBerry 5 installed as your OS, you can get your download on at the link below. Still haven't upgraded from 4.6? Sorry, folks, you're stuck with version 2.0.

DNA sequencing lays foundation for personalized cancer treatment

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis are using powerful DNA sequencing technology not only to identify mutations at the root of a patient's tumor ? considered key to personalizing cancer treatment ? but to map the genetic evolution of disease and monitor response to treatment.

"We're finding clinically relevant information in the tumor samples we're sequencing for discovery-oriented research studies," says Elaine Mardis, PhD, co-director of The Genome Institute at the School of Medicine. "Genome analysis can play a role at multiple time points during a patient's treatment, to identify 'driver' mutations in the tumor genome and to determine whether cells carrying those mutations have been eliminated by treatment."

This work is helping to guide the design of future cancer clinical trials in which treatment decisions are based on results of sequencing, says Mardis, who is speaking April 1 at the opening plenary session of the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in Chicago. She also is affiliated with the Siteman Cancer Center at the School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

To date, Mardis and her colleagues have sequenced all the DNA ? the genome ? of tumor cells from more than 700 cancer patients. By comparing the genetic sequences in the tumor cells to healthy cells from the same patient, they can identify mutations underlying each patient's cancer.

Already, information gleaned through whole-genome sequencing is pushing researchers to reclassify tumors based on their genetic makeup rather than their location in the body. In patients with breast cancer, for example, Mardis and her colleagues have found numerous driver mutations in genes that have not previously been associated with breast tumors.

A number of these genes have been identified in prostate, colorectal, lung or skin cancer, as well as leukemia and other cancers. Drugs that target mutations in these genes, including imatinib, ruxolitinib and sunitinib, while not approved for breast cancer, are already on the market for other cancers.

"We are finding genetic mutations in multiple tumor types that could potentially be targeted with drugs that are already available," Mardis says.

She predicts, however, that it may require a paradigm change for oncologists to evaluate the potential benefits of individualized cancer therapy. While clinical trials typically involve randomly assigning patients to a particular treatment regimen, a personalized medicine approach calls for choosing drugs based on the underlying mutations in each patient's tumor.

"Having all treatment options available for every patient doesn't fit neatly into the confines of a carefully designed clinical trial," Mardis acknowledges. "We're going to need more flexibility."

When during the course of cancer mutations develop also is likely to be important in decisions about treatment. In a recent study, Mardis and her team mapped the genetic evolution of leukemia and found clues to suggest that targeted cancer drugs should be aimed at mutations that develop early in the course of the disease.

Using "deep digital sequencing," a technique developed at The Genome Institute, they sequenced individual mutations in patients' tumor samples more than 1,000 times each. This provides a read-out of the frequency of each mutation in a patient's tumor genome and allowed the researchers to map the genetic evolution of cancer cells as the disease progressed.

They found that as cancer evolves, tumors acquire new mutations but always retain the original cluster of mutations that made the cells cancerous in the first place. Their discovery suggests that drugs targeted to cancer may be more effective if they are directed toward genetic changes that occur early in the course of cancer. Drugs that target mutations found exclusively in later-evolving cancer cells likely may not have much effect on the disease because they would not kill all the tumor cells.

Mardis says that sequencing the entire genome of cancer cells is essential to piecing together an accurate picture of the way cancer cells evolve. If the researchers had sequenced only the small portion of the genome that involves genes, they would not have had the statistical power to track the frequency of mutations over time. (Only 1 to 2 percent of the genome consists of genes.)

In another study, a phase III clinical trial of post-menopausal women with estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer, the Washington University researchers have shown that sequencing can help to predict which women will respond to treatment with aromatase inhibitors. These estrogen-lowering drugs are often prescribed to shrink breast tumors before surgery. But only about half of women with estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer respond to these drugs, and doctors have not been able to predict which patients will benefit.

Interestingly, by sequencing patients' breast tumors before and after aromatase inhibitor therapy, the researchers identified substantive genomic changes that had occurred in responsive patients, whereas the genomes of unresponsive patients remained largely unchanged by the therapy.

"No one has ever looked at treatment response at this level of resolution," Mardis says. "It's so obvious who is responding."

In addition, the researchers have identified a series of mutations in the breast tumors that have corresponding small-molecule inhibitor drugs that target defective proteins. This finding indicates that for women who are not responding to aromatase inhibitors, treatment options may include combining conventional chemotherapy with the indicated small-molecule inhibitor.

"We felt it was important to show there could be therapeutic options available to patients who are resistant to aromatase inhibitors," Mardis says. "As we move forward, we think sequencing will contribute crucial information to determining the best treatment options for patients."
